The breakApart() approach used in toolkits for laying out the gapFill exercise is probably the best thing I've got: see code in attached and example in Nottingham.ac.uk/toolkits/play_560

Yes,

had originally hoped that with

some leading text <img src="bullet.png" id="thing"/>here is a bullet point

that the img would be flowed into the text stream, so I could get the x,y of that bullet and use it to position the text entry mid-sentence.

But now we know the image is completely divorced from the text, so knowing the image x,y doesn't help in positioning anything.
