In terms of what mobile devices the current flash version of xerte runs on
it's actually as much about screen size/resolution as it is about technical
compatibility. e.g. technically it runs on all the netbooks/tablets/mobile
phones etc (apart from iOS!) that have a compatible flash player and for
most of the larger devices it's fine and a great solution. But when it comes
to smaller handheld mobile phones/devices even when it's technically
compatible practically it's not really suitable e.g. you would have to be
very committed to keep zooming in to read the tiny text let alone
interactions, or even to use the standard interface to navigate. A new XOT
template could be developed which is more optimised for the smaller
screens/resolution of these devices but I'm not sure that would be worth the
effort required. More likely to be useful would be the kind of proof of
concept Pat mentioned which to my mind wouldn't be likely to be able to
provide all of the functionality of the flash engine version but if that was
integrated so that when viewing on a mobile device there was either a manual
or automatic link to the non-flash version of the same LO that would be
brilliant! I know the Nottingham team have bid for funding for this kind of
work previously and clearly Pat has offered to revisit his proof of concept
but perhaps there is a community of interest that could contribute to that?
Also there are various JISC funding calls out at the moment that I'm sure
could include this kind of development as part of a project if there's a
University looking to do something with mobile learning.

It's not straightforward. Right now, Toolkits content will run on Android,
but not iOS because Apple don't support the Flash Player, but even that's
not perfect. Long term the goal will be to create an app that can consume,
parse and render the xml on iOS, but that's a long way down the line.

Ron knows better than I how the content works on various mobile devices...
Ron?

Hi Julia

Xerte Learning objects are embedded flash files which won't play on Apple
devices (as they don't support this format).

I'm not sure if the chaps have a work-around or if future support for
non-flash devices in on the development roadmap.

Subject: [Xerte] Xerte for mobile devices

Hi there,

I was wondering if you could offer me any advice please? I am about to
embark on a project which involves creating Reusable Learning Objects for
mobile devices (e.g. iPad, iPod, BlackBerry etc) and was wondering does
Xerte allow these Reusable learning objects to be delivered through such
mobile devices please?

Many thanks,

Julia
