Hi all
I've had problems reported on IE9 where text to speech doesn't seem to work irrespective of the IE settings that are tweaked.

Could any IE9 users have a go with TTS and let me know if it's working for you so we can begin to home in on the problem?

Many thanks

Alistair

Subject: Browser issues

Is anyone looking into the issues caused by IE9, we have tried a variety of settings and cannot get the text to voice to work. If you look at the previous browser settings then there is one thing that is included now that wasn't on IE8. We've tried setting this both on and off and it makes no difference. As a lot of places are now updating to this version of the browser it is going to cause issues.

Subject: New table template

Hi all
There have been discussions at different times about how best to represent tables in Xerte in a way that was accessible to keyboard users or text to speech users. Fay Cross from the University of Nottingham has now created a table template for Xerte online toolkits.

Here's a quick example: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/toolkits/play_6331

It will display basic tables and gives you a range of ways to present them. You can either enter the table data manually in the wizard or upload a CSV file.

If you currently do not have your own institution's installation of Xerte toolkits you can play with the table template on the JISC Techdis sandpit at www.techdisplayxerte.info.

If you already have your own institutional installation of toolkits then you can get your technical team to add the table template by getting them to follow the instructions below;

If your technical team have any further questions please encourage them to put them onto the Xerte technical list or search the archives. Both can be found at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/community.htm.

So here are the instructions. Don't expect me to answer questions on them, I am merely passing them on to you as I would to my own technical support guru!

The attached files need to be placed in the following locations...

table.rlm goes in the folder modules\xerte\parent_templates\Nottingham\models
data.xwd replaces the existing file at modules\xerte\parent_templates\Nottingham
wizard.swf replaces the file at modules\xerte\engine

It might be worth people backing up their old version of the data.xwd and wizard.swf files before they replace them in case of any problems.

Obviously, as with any free and open source tools, all tinkering is at your own risk and for your own rewards!

Alistair
