Yes, I haven't done much with the actual pages yet, been more concerned with nailing down the app itself. I assume bleedingImage could work just as the normal graphics page does, so my code can say if(normalGraphics || bleedingImage) loadThisView();

RSS can be added as a member of a learning space, in which case it would probably just include news, possible links to other sites which will open in the phones browser.

If you add a folder RSS feed from toolkits, the app should handle that differently, and let you drill straight down into the learning objects and then the pages. I need to put some examples together, and I'd really like to see what uses other people think of for using this effectively,

Just did a bit more testing - seems like the standard graphics and sound page works fine but the advanced/bleeding image page doesn't work at all - can the latter be included somehow?

Julian that's brilliant thanks managed to get the full version to install via one of the emulators (see screenshot below)

I've given up trying to get it to install on my HTC Hero - perhaps the rooted Froyo roms aren't compatible with Air and there doesn't seem to be a robust Gingerbread for Hero so I'm not even going to attempt that but at least I can test via an emulator.

In testing I managed to create a shared space but then removed some initial tests and checked the shared xml and that still contains the original url's is the shared space static or does re-sharing the same space update it?

How is the RSS supposed to work? I've added a feed which includes a load of LO's and I tested sharing the xml with a couple of them. All the lo's in the feed show in the list but it seems to want to try to run the swf rather than the xml. Does it look for the xml first and if it can't find it resort to the swf?

Yes I think two versions without and without air would be good - obviously with a recommendation to only try the full version via wifi rather than 3G.

When I can find time I plan to test further and will report back. Would be useful to know how the rss works as that seems the easiest and quickest way to share LO's.

Cheers
Ron

OK, two versions: the one that uses the separate Air runtime
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/downloads/mobileXerte.apk

And one that has the runtime packed up in the installer
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/downloads/mobileXerteFull.apk

Also a new version of Xerte 3.0, built on Air 3.1 and Flex 4.6.
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/downloads/xerte3Beta.exe

and an updated, but not entirely up to date Mac version - Peter can you update your SDKs and build a new one please?
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/downloads/xerte3_installer.dmg<http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/downloads/xerte3Beta.exe>

The mobileXerteFull works on my phone - Ron, let me know what happens? Also, should we have two versions? I think so, because the runtime dependent one is MUCH smaller (1.7MB vs. 24MB) although I suspect for many users making the install as easy as possible would be advantageous. However, 1.7 MB is manageable on 3G, 24MB is asking a bit much...

I'm using Xerte 3.0 to build this. I updated my SDKs to Flex 4.5.1 and Air 3.0 recently. My phone has updated itself to Air 3.0.0.408. The specs for Air 3.0 seem the same or similar?

http://www.adobe.com/products/air/tech-specs.html
Air 3.0 has something called captive runtime support. What that means is, yes, you can package up apps as a single file that includes the air runtime.
I've just discovered that there is a new Flex 4.6 SDK out. Hang on. (gotta say, keeping up with Flex is a nightmare). When I've updated everything I'll build you a one file app to try.

Hi Julian
a few questions...

Is there a way you can include the adobe air app within the app? I've rooted my HTC Hero to install Froyo and tried various versions of Adobe Air but unsuccessfully. I've also tried via the Android SDK on my Windows laptop and various OS/Device profiles but also without success.

Is there a specific requirements list e.g. Android version, Adobe Air version, Device compatibility?

Any progress with the iOS version?

I'd be happy to test and provide feedback and ideas as well as cascading to others but can't really justify purchasing yet another device to test with especially as I wouldn't really be able to test it works until after purchase.

Cheers
Ron

Yes, still working on it. I've just packed it up again for you, and could do with a small group of people to test / feedback etc.

http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/downloads/application.apk

I could also do with some sample learning spaces for demos etc. It also now supports 10 page types from toolkits: text, bullets, textGraphics, imageViewer, textVideo and all the navigators, so you can produced structured content and include text, graphics, sound and video. I think that goes a long way to start with...

You can now publish a learning space from the phone for other users to subscribe to. This is a beta feature: it writes xml to our web server - this may change. So you can, using just the phone, create a learning space, populate it with content, and publish it: I think this is potentially the game changer.

Please try creating some spaces, publishing them, post the QR codes here so others can attempt to subscribe etc, and let me know comments,

Julian

Not heard anything on the android app for a while. Is it still in development and are there any other features we can test out?
Thanks

To build for iOS I need the relevant Apple certificates.

This, apparently, is how to get one:

At 12 pages long, that's supposed to be an idiots guide to the process. What century is this?

Screenshots
The home screen shows your learning spaces. A learning space is a collection of learning resources. The buttons allow you to add a space, delete a space, and sort by name, created date or number of views. Ultimate idea is to allow users to share their learning spaces (somehow)

[cid:image009.png at 01CCB015.AB786E20]

Here's a learning space, showing most of the supported things so far:

[cid:image010.png at 01CCB015.AB786E20]

You can add content by scanning QR codes (can't screenshot that).

A toolkits folder with one learning object (now, when you add content I check out what sort of xml I get back, so those problems should have gone...)

[cid:image011.png at 01CCB015.AB786E20]

And LO content in the few supported pages types so far...

[cid:image012.png at 01CCB015.AB786E20]

An RSS feed:

[cid:image013.png at 01CCB015.AB786E20]

A youtube video (use the direct embed link, eventually I'll sniff this out and make it easier) in the form http://www.youtube.com/embed/qmvA-OMysmM

[cid:image014.png at 01CCB015.AB786E20]

An FLV file - mp4 should work as well...
[cid:image015.png at 01CCB015.AB786E20]

And a sound file (with albeit pretty crude controls so far)
[cid:image016.png at 01CCB015.AB786E20]

and you can add pretty much any web content as the phone will open anything it doesn't recognise in the phones browser via a WebView object:

[cid:image017.png at 01CCB015.AB786E20]

So that includes playing the LOs directly on the play_ url if the device can cope with it....
