For ref, all of the flickr searches are "safe". Which means it should be
under 18 content only.

If anyone has suggestions happy to take them onboard.

>From a staff development point of view it's magic because you point
people to one place and in one fell swoop it

* gets round the issues of copyright liability by only searching
appropriate content

* provides embedded attribution, thus making transparent
copyright-cleanliness
* provides auto-resize for reuse in PPT/Xerte/Word etc
* discretely offers alternative media (very useful in terms of
accessibility and reasonable adjustment awareness) since it searches on
the media you didn't request and displays the hits in the tabs.

For those working with learners under 18 yrs age it also provides a
(relatively) safe set of images; an important safeguarding consideration
in 14-19, Specialist Colleges and 6th form environments.

would be more useful with browse facilities IMO

How would you like to browse?

What does Xerte Image Search offer that these don't?

I'm assuming you didn't click on the select tab

are quite different. This difference is what it offers, as well as
providing powerpoint files and code for embedding into blogs. No other
service provides this.

The site also searches videos and podcasts from one location, which
images.google or flickr doesn't do.

Behind the typically spartan interface what goodies lurk?
---------------------------------------------------------
What would you like it to do?

Or has this been developed specifically for integration into Toolkits,
to allow
authors/developers to find media in the Toolkits environment?
-------------------------------------------------------------
Or both. It does both. When you access it via toolkits it sets up a
service to allow you to send your picture back directly without having
to download it locally. Outside to toolkits it offers different services
so it is contextually aware.

I'm curious as to how this was implemented. OAI-PMH? RSS?
---------------------------------------------------------
It's a mixture of RSS,OAI,external API,Screen scrapping,RDF,OAI-ORE and
lightweight web services.

This is a good idea and a useful tool (would be more useful with browse
facilities IMO), but it does seem to replicate existing meta-search
engines for media, in particular everystockphoto.com but also Google
Images (advanced search for "labelled for reuse"). What does Xerte Image
Search offer that these don't? That's not intended as a criticism.

As a developer who's been, and will likely be again, involved in
developing/using aggregators, I'm curious as to how this was
implemented. OAI-PMH? RSS?
