[Xerte] Camtasia Studio

The quizzes and surveys only work when output as flash & html e.g. don't
work when uploaded to YouTube. I think they can be set to send scorm calls
but I think Captivate wins out in that area however I don't think Captivate
is a tool for non-specialists.

Yes the PowerPoint add-in is very good for recording narrated presentations
and combining them with recorded demos etc.

One of the real benefits of Camtasia Studio for me is the automated zoom
areas and editing capability - much easier to trim clips and replace or
intersect new recordings than with Captivate. Again not everyone will go
that far but it is a tool that for instance a teacher could record the main
content easily and a specialist could tweak and improve with the same tool.
e.g. adding captions, zoom areas, animations etc.

Yeah, I can see the progression route. This would be baptism by fire for
some staff. I can see why someone like you would really like it (I quite
like it), but I can't think of too many teaching staff with ether the time
or skills to make the most of it - it seems a bit intimidating at first, but
perhaps that eases off with a bit of time. The trouble is getting staff
through that initial 'bit' of time. I don't know much about templates, so
I'll look into that.

We've been using it to synch up videos taken on cameras / other things and
synch them up with ppt slides, and wondered what else we might be able to do
with it.

Have you done anything with the quizzes / surveys? Do they hook up to any
backend for tracking? Are they good, well presented quizzes with feedback
for each option etc?

Any other killer features I might have missed?

I now use Camtasia Studio as my first choice over other pro tools like
Captivate. I used to prefer the latter because of the smaller files size
e.g. recording stills rather than continuous motion and outputting as flash
but with devices like iOS devices and popularity and functionality of
YouTube video seems to be the best format anyway and Camtasia Studio is far
more like a video editing tool than other tools. There are loads of
resources and tutorials on the camtasia site and elsewhere so I think all of
your listed profiles apply. It's got good options for setting up templates
with intro's and outro's etc so that all teaching staff have to do is record
their bit. But it's definitely not as easy to use as camstudio or jing or
screenr etc. I'd say there's a progression route from those solutions to
Camtasia Studio for those who really want to get more professional results
via post production and editing etc.

I suspect you know all that.

Hiya,

Does anyone here have experience using Camtasia Studio? Does anyone have any
experiences of teaching staff using Camtasia Studio? We're looking at it,
and I'm playing around a little bit. I wonder if this is a tool that
teaching staff can use:

- Unaided

- Can use with a bit of training

- Can use with ongoing training and support

- Cannot use, as it's too complicated

Thanks,

J
