It's because the passage of text is broken up into individual
movieclips, so no, you can't, but you should be careful: making the text
bold will make it wider: you could then end up with words that don't fit
into their gaps,

Hi

Just reporting what may be a bug in text boxes, if you try to italicise
or make some text bold, we are seeing just the 1st word in the selection
made bold or italic. I find that applying a bold or italic (right click
over selected text etc) over every word works.

Maybe consider using a basic WYSISYG for the text box also?
