Pages 1,2 and 3 create database.php out of setup/database.txt

This is then saved into the root folder as database.php

I am guessing the setup folder wasn't chmod 0777

The error message you have there is the "no database details specified"
error message when you try to do mysql without telling it where to go,
so it tries locally and fails.

I have reset permissions on root to 777 
There is a file called data.php (but not the others)
Now I get an error 
"The sitedetails site ID query insert into sitedetails(site_id) VALUES (
"1") has failed due to Can't connect to local MySQL server through
socket
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)"

Any more suggestions appreciated

You should have a file called database.txt or database.php in the root.

I am guessing you didn't make the root writable to?

It happens when I click submit query on page3.php which links to
page4.php
As far as I know I have entered the data correctly on page1.php &
page2.php
Looking on my control panel I can see that a DB has been setup with 11
tables (so I must be doing something right! I think?)

Page 3 as in page3.php?

It's been a while since I've been in setup but page3.php doesn't go the
database.

Page2.php connects to the database using the details from page1.php

Page1.php doesn't connect to the database.

Page4.php does a load of database stuff.

In terms of mysql you need to use

On the first page

Admin username
Admin password (with such permissions as to be be able to create
databases)
Host
Database name
Table prefix

On the second page you enter the database account set up for site users.

What details do you need to add on page 3 of setup?

I just added admin username and password. Do I need to add or change
anything else?

However, I get an error "No database selected" despite seemingly having
successfully connected to DB on previous setup pages
