The host is the name of the database server you are using

If it is the same server as the one your web content runs on type in
localhost

Pat,

Thanks for your feedback. I'm not sure I understand your last sentence,
but when I started over again from scratch and left the settings at 755,
I was able to successfully continue to the next page of the install.
LOL. Of course on that page, I found new challenges; the first being
what to enter for "the name of the host where you would like the
toolkits database to be created on."

I'm uncertain what I need to enter here, or in what format it should be
(e.g. what it should look like). Should I be entering the server name?
The home directory? The public HTML directory?

Thanks,
Pete

Hello,

755 should work, though for the install 777 takes the chance away of any
problems.

You could try again using 755 (as I believe some people on here have
done so already).

500 is an apache error - generated by your web server. If it doesn't
like 777 then there's nothing that can be done other than the above.

If you're using shared hosting you'll I suspect not be able to adjust
php.ini so you shouldn't worry about it (though you'll find the size of
the files you can upload will be seriously limited).

The installer "is" the step by step guide. We've never had a server
doesn't like this error before, normally it's just the database going
screwy.

Subject: [Xerte] How to Install Xerte Online Toolkits

Hi all,

I'm a true novice to working with web servers and web hosting. Although
I had no trouble installing the Xerte desktop app on my laptop, when I
tried my hand at installing Xerte Online Toolkits on my web server, I
ran into trouble. My hosting service is Siteground
(www.siteground.com).

I was able to download toolkits, and upload it to the server into its
own folder, without a problem. I was then able to successfully use my
browser to view the "setup" page. On that page, Xerte directs you to
set permissions for roughly five folders/files to 777. I should note
that the default setting for all of these folders was 755. I was able
to successfully change the permissions to 777. However, upon trying to
"continue" the install, I received an error message that reads: "500 -
internal server error." The error page lists several possible reasons
for this error, with one of them being: "Incorrect file/directory
permissions: Above 755."

By the way, that initial Xerte Toolkits setup page also directs you to
adjust several php files. Some of those files I was completely unable
to find.

I looked for guidance in the list archives, and through a general web
Google search, but perhaps I'm not searching in the correct manner or in
the correct location.

Is there a step-by-step setup guide for Xerte Online Toolkits?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
