Hi Martin,
If I open the file from my desktop - I get no pop up and null in the text box.
If I run the file from localhost (please excuse me if this is patronising - say http://localhost/index.html) - I get the pop up and the message in the text box.
Where are you running the local file from?

Diferent behaviour
Blank page with button below
When this button pressed no pop-up; appears word "null" inside the text box
Tested with Explorer 6 and firefox: same results.
