There is an example named Custominteterface where u have a meniu that  you can drag all over the interface.My question is if u can put a picture(jpeg or gif) on the background of that control instead of the blue background color?

Yes, you can. In the [xerte]\templates\frameworks folder in the
directory you installed xerte to is the source code. Have a play,

After installed newest versions of Xerte the scorm doesn?t function: the variables do not
communicate with web-server. (It seems is related to change in the scorm management in
Xerte)

Using the same .rlo:

Version 1.5.0.4 beta downloaded 27/06/2007   Ok  (variables and runtime ok)
Version 1.7   downloaded 22/08/2007   Not OK
Version 1.8                           Not OK
Version 1.9   downloaded 16/11/2007   Not OK

I started from last one and installed one after another.

I erased all files from de directory of the .rlo before producing packages between
previous installations.

and the .zip function again OK the scorm works.(with the last 1.5.0.4 beta version)


I corrected scromRLO.htm line 3  (last 1.8 version and 1.9)

from

<script type="text/javascript" src="apiwrapper.js"></script>

to 

<script type="text/javascript" src="APIWrapper.js"></script>  //the name of the file in
the zip

and cn?t fix it with newest versions.

I?m using now the old version till can use the new ones

I am a German student who is working in the occupational medicine in Gie?en at the moment. And I?ve got the assignment to create an e-learning project with Xerte for medicine students.
I already know that Xerte is an amazing programme but it seems to me that Xerte has problems with other files like pdf.
But maybe you are able to help a novice like me.
At first I want to tell you that I tried to convert a pdf-document to a flash-document with FlashPaper 2. But the quality of the text was unacceptable. So I was looking for other methods. Of course I know that we can use ActionScript to fulfil this task. But I'm also a novice in ActionScript. So I wrote that e-mail because I am completely stumped and hope that you have an idea how to integrate pdf in Xerte similar to an integration of pdf-files in ordinary html-documents.

Julian,

I'm attempting to present some information in a table. I've worked out a
way to use the drawBorder() method on some text icons, but it is a
labor-intensive way to go about it, so I wonder if there is a better way
that you know of. Do you think snapToGrid() would be useful for this?

Also, I've noticed a problem in that I have a perpetual button (using
the button.swf) with a Tool Tip that no longer displays. Actually, this
was a problem in 1.8 as well. When I hover over the button, after about
a half a second, the cursor changes to an I-beam and clicking does
nothing. If I click right after placing the pointer over the button it
will display my Table of Contents (it runs a script that executes
rootIcon.showTOC();), but if I take too long nothing happens when you
click. And no tool tip in either case. If it matters, I have the default
interface turned off.

well its just a trick and even netscape should be able to do this.
to embed a pdf-file in a webpage you must write:

<embed src="http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/manual/Xerte%20Getting%20Started.pdf" width="50%" height="400">

and I have already created a link but it is not what I'm actually looking for because we want the pdf-document in the presentation and not beyond of it.

FlashPaper might be an option. It can embed a pdf in a SWF file, so it
might work to display a pdf in Xerte. I haven't used it myself, but on
the product page it shows a pdf embedded in a web page via Flash:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashpaper/

There is a free trial you could play around with ...

I downloaded 1.9, but I still have the problem with the tool tip. One
thing I forgot to mention that maybe should be considered is that to
make the button always available, I used mainEntryFrame.swapDepths(99);.
So maybe the Tool Tip is on a lower layer? I guess not: for testing, I
set the layer back to 1, and it still didn't show the tool tip.
 
I have been using some of the drawing tools for my table. To create a
"heading" row, I've been setting the lineStyle and beginFill, then
drawing a rectangle of the appropriate size. The problem I have with the
rest of the table is that the heights of the rows will vary depending on
how much text I need to fit, so I've been using Text icons (one cell per
icon), then setting the h property of the text icon and using
iconID.drawBorder(1,'#000000',100); to draw the cell borders. It works
well, and by using the 'Duplicate Icon' feature, it's not as much work
as I thought it was going to be for a 2 column, 10 row table.

iconID.lineStyle before calling either Flash or Xerte's drawing methods

button, after about a half a second, the cursor changes to an I-beam and
clicking does nothing. If I click right after placing the pointer over
the button it will display my Table of Contents (it runs a script that
executes rootIcon.showTOC();), but if I take too long nothing happens
when you click. And no tool tip in either case. If it matters, I have
the default interface turned off.

I am so sorry to ask this question but how does a screen reader user or
someone trying to use the text to speech access this file?  It is keyboard
accessible which is really good and the text can be enlarged but colours
cannot be changed.  I am just wondering whether the only way to get round
this is issue would be to provide an audio file of the content.

The ZIP file contains both Flash 8 and Flash MX 2004 files to embed the
FlashPaper file.

Good to know that it's easy to embed a PDF doc in Xerte via FlashPaper, I
never had really thought about this ... ;-)

TBH: I don't know, I don't have a screen reader installed at the moment. Those who have, would you mind to have a try and share your experiences? I have only started using FlashPaper three days ago (for the purpose of this Xerte example), therefore I may have overlooked something but it seems to me that it's difficult to customise any part of the FlashPaper file (perhaps by intention ...). When you import the FlashPaper file into the library of another Flash file, you only get a loose collection of symbols which do not make any sense.
In my opinion it would be best to get in contact with Adobe and ask them about this issue.

Which colours do you refer to, the colours of the FlashPaper interface?

Your Script works excellent and I am totally happy about this (I wish you could see my big smile :-D). And by the way I have finally found the reason for the bad quality of my pdf - flashpaper document. The pdf-document contains scans, which had already a bad quality. Sounds ridiculous but that?s why I thought that flashpaper is not good enough. Anyway what I want to tell you is: You?re great and thanks for your support.

I'm using the button.swf that Xerte installed in the
Xerte\templates\flexStyleComponents folder. It used to work without a
problem. I think the behavior I noted was introduced in version 1.8.

	You're using custom buttons right? Or native Xerte ones? It
might be that I never built the tooltip into the native buttons. The
tooltip is added to the parent page of the interaction, at a high depth,
so changing the depth of the entry frame shouldn't be the problem.

works well, and by using the 'Duplicate Icon' feature, it's not as much

To answer your points:
 
Video loop. You mean you want a 'loop' property, like the sound icon? You can make it loop right now using the onMovieComplete event to trigger some code that resets and plays the movie again. I can adda loop property, but I'm not sure if it's something that people would use?
 
I don't experience any problems dragging and dropping icons. Generally the rule is to drag it into the parent icon you want to add it to. You can also right click and use the context menu, or double click icons in the palette to insert them.
 
I'm not sure what you mean by a 'preview of the custom color set function'?
 
I can add those keys in for delete and help.
 
You can tell whether an icon is collapsed or not. Icons are greyed out slightly if they are closed and empty, fully coloured if they are closed and contain children. There were some good reasons for hiding the disclosure arrows.
 
Adding an icon to a closed icon does expand it. Right?
 
I'm aware of the bug that prevents you deleting custom properties, but remember that if the property isn't listed, the engine will not know what to do with it - you must handle it yourself in your own code.
 
Can you elaborate on the media browser functionality you'd like to see?
 
True WYSIWYG is very difficult to achieve, as the editor is editing an xml file - to see that file play, it must be saved, read by the engine and parsed. Remember the CTRL-F5 and SHIFT-F5 shortcuts.
 
You can hide the default interface by changing visuals to 0 on the interface icon. Then you can make your own. You can hide the theme selector buy using the code:
 
rootIcon.themes._visible = false;
 
similarly for the size control
 
rootIcon.sizes._visible = false;

I?ve been progamming Authorware for 10 years.
 
First impression of Xerte is - "a nice authoring tool with nice template design".
 
but...(I have Win XP home edition)
 

*	I couldn?t get a video to loop which should be obvious. 
*	Often there is a problem when drag ?n dropping the icons to create a page, a text , a framework etc. I have to do it over and over again to finally get it there on the flowline. When there is a red line showing the place where I want to put an icon - it wont work- the plus-sign dissapares. 
*	I like a preview of the custom color set function. 
*	I like some standard keys to work - like when a icon is marked you should be able to delete it with the "delete" key, f1 for help and so on. 
*	I would like to see the preview at the same time - which updates when you edits the pages - as Lectora, Authorware and toolbook etc. A WYSYWIG function. But the F5 key is great also. 
*	If an icon is collapsed, you must see a plus-sign to understand that it is collapsed. 
*	When you add an icon to a collapsed icon it should expand 
*	You should disable the add new property line if it isn?t allowed - for instance - I added a new property line "loop" to a video just to try it - then I couldn?t delete the line neither did the function work - it didn?t loop. So make it disabled or don?t disable the delete key at that time. 
*	When looking after media to insert - you should have an browser function to look after images, videos and sound with the appropiate extensions. mp3, flv  etc. It could be inserted at the right end on the value line 
*	The color template chooser I hope can be hided from the user to make sure the authors design and will come through.
