[Xerte-dev] Re: PHP compatibility

I think one of the first things that i need to do is revisit the api... We had discussed previously turning all the ajax calls into api endpoints. That way most of the database abstractions would actually be being called from within the api code.

My initial interpretation of the api was external only so i have done all the work of oauth authorization so i think just taking care of logged in user authentication should allow us to expand the api to take care of the other internal processes...

I don't know how much work it is, I have the impression it's not to much, but haven't investigated yet. But I agree with Pat that we should use an abstraction layer. As that offers the most flexibillity in the future

I would like to implement MySQLi and PDO to start with.

Fundings are always welcome. I just don't think it is so much work, as we don't do anything fancy with SQL.

The other thing I would like to do (and I already started on that) for the next version, is to get rid of the current site_details table, and replace it with a key, value table.

It strikes me this is case where the ‘scratch your own itch’ principle fails to provide an optimum solution. Do we need to find some sponsorship to pay for the work to be done? How much work do you think there is?

I already formulated my wish to be able to use more db engines than only mysql/mariadb.

I am willing to spend some time on it. Not sure how far I will get. But, I simply think that we can't afford to simply formulate our wishes and expect it to be implemented.

That doesn;t mean that we shouldn't formulate our wishes.

I understand where you are coming from, and I understand your reasoning. But I respectfully disagree.

This is just a typical re-factoring which we will be obliged to do from time to time. No new functionality involved, perhaps new opportunities.

The question is more MySQLi vs. PDO. Or a more generic approach Like David Goodwin used for authentication. We don't do anything fancy with the database.

I think someone needs to start from stating the requirements (do you just want to stick to using MySQL/MariaDB) or do you need to support e.g. SQLite (or whatever).

thanks,

David.
