I still think the idea of an ‘App Store’ or more likely an
‘Extend’ area is a good one… the plugins could go in there too
for example, as well as themes and the more that end users who don’t
want to really get involved in the really technical stuff can still
get involved means that the Community can still grow…

I think Data Visualisation is going to be very important in the
future and Pat’s Simile Timeline creator will be fantastic..,
already have plans for that for a few nursing based things… The
DecisionTree is another one that might even have more potential,
especially within areas where Scenario Based Learning is in use and
also just to evaluate and focus learning where it’s is required…

So I’m really excited about these two extensions that Pat has
produced and I’m going to start building some things soon with
them…

For end users? Or for site administrators? It would be quite cool if
end users could choose which templates were available. Not sure that
would sit so easily with sysadmins though.

You know the answer to that: we don’t currently have a formal
process. My main concern is about stopping things geting messy, and to
make sure things are as good as they can be before we include them.
You can mix and match via embed content, but I know users would prefer
to do everything in one place if they can. Not doubting any
usefulness, or the benefits other developers will bring…

what process does it go through to be approved in the zip?

You can mix and match using the embed content pane should you wish
too.

My thoughts / goal with modularisation is it might bring in new
developers who'll then help improve core.

Not fussed about being in the zip. Wrote these for work, and can
mangle the php into anything. Just sharing because useful.

I guess the app store / community site comes into its own when folk
outside the core development group start building stuff. I haven’t
seen your templates yet. Without seeing them I don’t know if they
could be a page type within the main template? That would always be
the best way of adding functionality, because as you know, if they are
in different templates, people can’t mix and match them. That’s
why interactive diagram, multiple perspectives are in the main
template, not separate templates.

Whilst we are doing the development, we can review and include new
stuff with each release. Perhaps the installer should set up which
templates are available – defaults to ‘All’ and you can untick
ones you don’t want.

Have you got examples of content built with your new templates online
anywhere?

There is a logic to taking a position. You could ask why site is in
the zip, but not one of the others?

So say with Drupal, if a plugin is popular it is subsumed into the
core code and becomes part of the install

If all plugins go into the zip, that is perhaps neater, but the
alternative is to build some sort of app store

Am not sure they make the released zip, would be good to have an idea
about that.

Trying to work out the rest of the idea, basically it is some HTML,
and then a form, then a series of responses?

The QR code itself seems spurious to the spec?

	[Xerte-dev] Re: New Modules

	Good Morning everyone,

I’m looking forward to trying these out once they make it into the
distributed zip file.

I’ld also like to propose a possible new module which would
primarily aid interactivity in the classroom/lecture theatre. The
basic idea would be to combine Ron’s QR Code stuff with a template
enabling users to choose a response aim their phones at the associated
QR Code and add their ‘vote’ or ‘comment’ to a text wall.

I could probably write it myself in perl, but that wouldn’t be
terribly helpful to anyone else. Unfortunately it would be well beyond
my current skills with php. My initial thought is that three QR Codes
could be provided, e.g. ‘Yes/Agree’, No/Disagree,Comment/Question.

The Template would present the viewer with some text and the three QR
Codes. Users could click on one of the QR codes which would actually
by a URL to a php script which updated a text wall. The
Comment/Question option would additionally present the user with a
form in which they could type some text on their device and then
submit that. The Image for the QR Code could be also linked to the
script via a conventional hyperlink, i.e. you’ld click on the QR
code rather than use your phone.

There are a number of sites which enable you to generate QR Codes on
the fly so this should not be too problematic, and by embedding a
large random number into the URL for each instance you could
differentiate between them.

This technique could probably be extended to other templates where it
would be useful to solicit feedback from users, e.g. the
‘stimulating question’ type of template.

	Kindest Regards,
 Thomas

2 new modules for XOT - should work fine - happy to take on feedback.
Simile is quite complex, decision tree is very basic, but with some
skinning could be quite powerful
