Hmm...

Ok, well at least that's ruled MOD out, and the videos are now presenting with the correct mime/type at my end...

Did you see my second email, I can only reproduce a partial problem with the Peer Review video and it is the longest/biggest so i'm wondering if that has something to do with it...

As for the Flash issue, see attached screenshot - Chrome is definitely using html 5 video at my end (see context menu controls and <video/source> tags (with the doubling of the src= attributes which I think accounts for the 2 pairs of requests... not really sure why but with that one video, one of the 206 partial requests very often times out or just hangs for a really long time (over 15 minutes at one point) and therefore the buffer doesn't fill. less than half the time though the buffer fills to under 50% and the video plays and the buffer then fills up...

I've even downloaded all the videos and xml and put it in a LO on my machine running XAMPP and get EXACTLY the same behaviour, only this one video giving any real problems - some of the others take a second or two to buffer...

Not really sure where to go now with this... but it plays well in IE and the strange thing is that it plays fine for me in Firefox too (and seems to be using HTML video and not Flash???) see attached screenshot 2.

Hi John,

Thanks a million for trying to solve this (video in xot)

So ...

1. I can't find any gzip or deflate in the server. mod_deflate and mod_gzip are NOT installed for apache, so the content is not compressed.
2. I fixed the mime-type (you REALLY have to clear your local cache.. :-) )

As far as I can tell, the correct sizes are displayed for the movies, and they are marked as video/mp4 now. However, it still doesn't work....

Not in Chrome. I didn't test IE before the mime-type change, but after the change at least, it seems to work a lot better in IE10 on WS7 64bit.

Also, it looks like media-elements is falling back to flash in Chrome, because flash player plug-in seems to cause the lock-up.

Hi Tom,

I've done a bit of investigation and I can reproduce a similar problem, but only consistently on slide 13, the Peer Review one... it OCCASIONALLY happens on a few others or you get a small delay sometimes and that got me thinking what is different about that particular file...

The moov is fine... it plays fine downloaded in VLC... but it is the biggest of them all.

If you look at the attached Word doc then you will see that for every slide change, MediaElements makes 4 requests to get each mp4 (not really sure why it makes 2 pairs of requests). I assume the first is a HEAD request (although Chrome says it's a GET) to find out whether the server accepts ranges and to get the size... then it makes a Range Request and gets a 206 Partial back... Also, the video is responding as application/octet-stream and not video/mp4

Looking at your phpinfo (you need to rename or remove your setup folder) file you also have gzip and deflate turned on for that server. I think these are interfering with the MP4 and the Partial requests.

Can you fix the mime types and see if that makes a difference and if not then try turning either/both of gzip/deflate off for mp4s and see if that makes a difference?

John,

I published the LO:

If you have any idea where to look, we would be most grateful.

Hi Inge,

Definitely looks like a bug, possibly with the media player... unfortunately the link you sent, the LO hasn't been published so we can't access it to test. If you can change that then i'll take a look.

Hi,

I have made an instructional learning object with a lot of small video's in it. They are all mp4's and working fine when I use the menu (except in firefox ;))

But my lo doesn't work. Randomly at some point one of the videos has no view (only sound) or stops after 3 seconds. It's not always the same video.....

I've made a short screen cast so you can see what I mean.

and a link to the lo

Any ideas?

Bye,
Inge
