[Xerte-dev] Copyright

I have an awful feeling this could get complicated. I didn't know that Tom and Johnathan had added the copyright statement. I think this is important to get right, from a legal point of view in case we ever need recourse to the law. I don't want to start a holy war, so please, take this with positive intent.

As I understand it, The University of Nottingham owns the copyright to the code. The reason my name is on there is because the original engine was my own piece of work, predating my time at the University, everything got built on that. This is one of the reasons why the UoN agreed to make the code open source in the first place.

There are many people who have contributed that aren't listed as copyright holders. If I contributed to, say, Apache or Mozilla I wouldn't expect to own copyright in that project (nor would I want to). I would like to be credited for my contributions somewhere though. Crediting contributions is entirely different.

What do you want to do here? If you're keen to exert your rights to copyright in the contributions you've made, then I'm going to have to seek some advice, mainly because I don't know if this undermines UoNs ability to defend the work, should it need to, and I have an awful feeling that doing so would open a right can of worms.

Some information here might be useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contributor_License_Agreement . I probably need to read this carefully, but something like this would allow you to retain copyright in your work, whilst contributing code to a codebase that is copyright UoN.

This might be a discussion for the workshop? But we need to resolve this before we release the software.

Would you mind correcting the spelling of "Jonathan" in the copyright listing

correct is "Johnathan"
