I'd gathered that, but not looked into the specifics, but if I'm right you can define events, and have data tracked when those events occur?

Longtail has support for plugins, so we can add a google analytics events plugin to record when the media is played / how much is played - this was for the OER project where that kind of stuff matters.

I found mediaelements a bit buggy at times. odd things used to happen with the volume controls. Mediaelements has some GA support, but I could never make it work properly.

Videojs seemed a bit faffy to install, so I fell back on longtail.

We could have used the free longtail anyways - and I would have - but the GA stuff was a massive plus.

off - topic if you've not seen the Google Analytics event stuff it is an utter bonaza in OER reuse stats.

Thanks for the info Johnathan. I realised there might still be some problems with distributing it but initially I hadn't realised there was a creative commons version at all. I was going to ask someone who knew more about it than I do! What do you think about including something like this Julian?

"just looked again and realised there is an open source version I overlooked"

Open Source does not always mean free of cost or free from restriction on use.

The Open Source JW FLV Player can be downloaded from

http://www.longtailvideo.com/players/jw-flv-player

However by downloading the player you are committing to the non-commercial licence which includes the text

"Noncommercial - You may not use this work for commercial purposes."

I am no legal expert but I think that the following would probably apply:
1. Including the player in Xerte or XOT would not be in breach of the licence as long as the attribution terms of the licence were met.
2. Any user of Xerte or XOT who used the JW FLV Player in their learning object would have to buy a commercial licence if for example they charged fees for the education they provided.

However it might be possible to get a waiver of some of the terms of the licence from the copyright holder. This may be what moodle did. It is some time since I looked "under the bonnet" at moodle but they used to supply an early version of the JW FLV Player as part of the Moodle install.

There is a link to the licence details from the above mentioned url.

Kind regards

Johnathan

At the moment I am using the video/audio tags and had made a custom control bar for it so it looked more consistent across browsers. The controls are a bit temperamental though so I needed to do some more work on this. Will try out JW Player properly now as this could be a much simpler (and better) option.

JW Player would probably be the prime candidate, yes. Sally has been using it, having reviewed pretty much everything else out there, and it does one very good thing in that we can encode to H.264 and it will play it natively if the browser supports, else failover to the JW Flash player to play it if not. Sally, again, after a lot of research reports that that combination covers 'enough' of the situations... and it will also cope with the existing flv content, and the failover will work for mp3 too.

I'd been perplexed about how we could handle just native html5 without having to have the user upload lots of different formats, which didn't seem ideal.

For the GW project at Oxford we used longtail - mostly because you can add google analytics events trackers (and it has JS which does the whole HTML 5 thing for you)

Random question

by HTML 5 are we meaning HTML (plus video and audio)

or are we doing the whole Canvas / SVG craziness as well?

If we do SVG then a lot of stuff becomes kinda fun.......

likewise Nottingham and 2 days fine with me but good to confirm the dates asap.

Suffice to say it's important to get the objectives and target audience right. My hunch is the day or perhaps half-day public session might be better on a completely separate date with some time between. e.g. either before as Thomas suggests or possibly after so that there's time for changes before the public session.

Nottingham is fine with me and some weekday time between September 17th and October 19th sounds ideal.

One thought ....

It may be better to hold the 'public' session at the start rather than at the end, because that will give the development team a chance to reflect on any issues that have been raised by the stakeholders. Presumably too we can 'broadcast' it, possibly using the new Janet VideoConferencing application, Visimeet from http://www.IOCOM.com , which is VERY good.

OK. The Xenith project is funded until Oct 19th. I can see good reasons to do this before the time runs out, because we'd be able to count this as part of the project (which is likely to have some budget left, although not much, before you get all excited) and point to all the good outcomes that result from our meeting(!); similarly I can see good reasons to wait until afterwards. What do you guys think? If we did it before Oct 19th, it would have to be sometime after September 17th .

Also, what about a venue? Happy to host it here again. Two days felt about the right length of time last time,

Tom's idea of a post project review is a good one, it might also be useful to consider any particular aspects of the development project that worked particularly well and that we might want to build on as well as any possible areas for improvement.

With respect to future developments I am particularly interested in how html5 and a page development environment are brought together.
