Over ?the turn of the New Year, we have relocated to a new residence bungalow (see address below).?? I was very busy ?translocating my large insect collection and extensive library safely and in working order.? Some amount of sanity has again been re-established and I am now finally able to ?get back to e-mails, correspondence, research, and publishing, in this new year.? However, some more weeks will be required before everything is in total working order and things are put in place for necessary ?search and execute? functions, as before, for efficiency and completeness, besides catching up with pending jobs and unrequited correspondence.

I've done as much as I can with the resources immediately to hand, but will
keep adding images and information as these become available. About 255 of
the 280 British species are covered, and hopefully this will also be of use
to European workers and convince some of you that Pipiza lugubris, P.
fenestrata and Cheilosia griseiventris are probably good species!

I have just come across another set of larval densities of 'Eristalis tenax' (probably mostly Eristalinus taeniops, to judge from the photo of the reared adults) from Egypt, done in the 1970s right across Egypt, much more extensive than the ones I told you about below. There is a great range of estimates from consistently 0 in some habitats (water tanks) to dense aggregations in places such as drainwater, the drains of slaughterhouses, flooded latrines and seepages (which range from 12 to 85 larvae per 900 cm? water surface).

I have not come across any proper estimates of larval densities in the field for Eristalis tenax. There are some for other Eristalis  and Eristalinus species in Egypt from monthly surveys in, for example, sewage settling ponds. These vary from about 3 to about 60 larvae per 900 cm? surface in a gravel-bed hydroponic system where the water is 30 cms deep. This is about 30 to 650 larvae per m? water surface.

What is most important to ALL of us, 

is the translation of the KEY to species
and then
the type information for the new species (which, yes, I can see it is based on a holotype female from ?Persia? but where is the type deposited and are there any more precise geographic details.

Hi Babak, 

I received Syrphidae material from Iran, in it are 2
species of Pelecocera. One should be P. persiana, the other (1 male) I
cannot identify yet. 
But both need to be confirmed... 
Maybe a good
idea to find out together and make a nice publication?

Female. Frons black, slightly gray-pollinated. Face brownish-KOH
richnevoe in heavy gray opshenii. Width of the forehead and the faces of a base of antennae poperechniktlaza exceeds this psec at 2.75 times (see Fig. 1.3). Hi Jens-Herman,

All is done an old (10 years) Linux pc with Ubuntu 12.10. I used
gscan2pdf (scans from scanner but also opens pdf's) which gave me very
good pdf's ready for ocr, it deskrews and unpapers the pdf's also
resizes it for better recognition. You can use directly ocr in gscan2pdf
but i find it less useful as I cannot edit and look at the paper at the
same time.

Then I use ocrfeeder which does nice analysing of the text/img blocks
and I run tesseract with Russian language and some parts (like
literature) in English (although it was not the best choice). But I had
to manually change all Latin in the Russian text though. It is possible
to -train- tesseract to understand both Latin and Russian but I didn't
dive into it.

After export from ocrfeeder to text I just copy/paste it into google
translate. and add the translation to the text.

 Hope that helps. If you want to try this I can help in more detail if
you like.

My plan initially is to be able to upload (all of you) a pdf or djvu
file on my website and run on request the ocr and translate on request
again via google translate in whatever language you like (which is
possible) and add the result in a wiki style page so people (we) can
adjust it for future use.
