[Syrphidae] Re: Re : Publication of the winter of hoverflies

Dear all,

considering overwintering Syrphidae, I’m getting more and more convinced that no European species has this overwintering as adult as only strategy. In my opinion it always are species that have many generations a year and more generations in warmer climates than in colder climates. All these species you might find on the wing in winter in the Mediterranean. In more temperate areas they will get less and less active with dropping temperatures. Both males and females will start sheltering somewhere in colder periods. As long as temperatures (or other circumstances?) are not to bad, most will survive. Eventually most will die, males much faster than females. At the end of winter only few will still survive, all of them females. Whether they have offspring or not I don’t know.
I remember that someone has written on this subject regarding Eupeodes corollae somewhere in Germany. It fits well with all species people listed: Scaeva selenitica, S. pyrastri, Eristalis tenax, Episyrphus balteatus. You will find males and females in late autumn, often much more females than males. And in spring you only find females, at least in the Netherlands. And these species are also the most abundant migrating species. Eristalinus aeneus also hibernates as adult in the Netherlands. It has several generations a year, but I am not sure whether E. aeneus migrates regularly.

Best wishes

Wouter

Hello every one,

Let me ask you because I like to know if there is publication on the hoverflies that would be able to spend the winter as adults.

Is it a rare or known ? Does research have been done about it ?

Best wishes

Pierre

  Hallo Jeroen,

je zonnet.nl adres bounced (mailbox vol) dus dan maar ook via de maillijst. Hopelijk krijg je dit wel toe?
Voor mij ook een exemplaar. Heel leuk overigens dat je het werk van Jan Lucas afmaakt.

  groeten,

  Frank

Yes, and your name is in Dutch "Piet"!

  I admit it is childish!
