[Syrphidae] Re-Wingbeat frequencies

Hello all,

Some of the flight peak frequencies that my colleagues and I have recorded also ranged from 133-200 Hz for Spilomyia sayi, S. longicornis, Eristalis flavipes and E. transversa. Of course as expected, there were also intraspecific variations.

All the best,
Arash

Hi all,

Via my website I received the following interesting question from Israel...

"I would like to find out if it is true that the wing flight speed of a
syrphid can achieve 5 ms which means – 200 per second?"

...anyone has an answer on this? I guess there is a range.

regards,
Bastiaan

There are more than 50 determinations of wing-beat frequencies in the
literature, ranging between 110 and 330 Hz

Hi All,

Further to the question about wingbeat frequencies, a few years ago a student of mine
carried out an informal analysis of the relationship between WBF and body size in syrphids
and other insects. He found some differences in these relationships between groups
(although the literature used was more restricted than the set Francis reports). If
anyone would like to talk a little more drop me a direct email.

All best,

Matthew
