Alan,

A fundamental problem is knowing if it is balteatus you are looking at or
some similiar species. I regularly see specimens that look identicle to
balteatus in India and Nepal (E. tenax is usually present too), and have
seen it in various European countries (where it should be featured in
official national lists). The Catalogue of Palaearctic Diptera (Soos &
Papp, 1984-1993) will be a good starting point.
