<div dir="ltr">Amen to all that has been said so far about Walter. The essence of humility and generosity. He was very kind to me when I was a brand new professor and member of IRA--in the late 60s and early 70s. Many talks about assessment and why the GMRA was the way it was.<div><br></div><div>One of my favorite studies of his and (I think) Kate Maria was one in which they took the directions from kindergarten letter and word readiness programs, kept all the "directions" intact, such look at the first word in the second line, and substituted geometric shape names for content words, such as word, letter, line, etc. The results demonstrated just how complex the directions are in tasks even for novice readers.
