From Charlotte.Lee at nottingham.ac.uk Mon Nov 1 15:27:03 2021 From: Charlotte.Lee at nottingham.ac.uk (Charlotte Lee) Date: Mon, 1 Nov 2021 15:27:03 +0000 Subject: [Public-engagement] COP26 and Nottingham: seizing the moment In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: [https://mcusercontent.com/27dbe2623b441ebb6de9121f2/images/36a7a990-83f8-29a2-9700-c6cf9df72cee.jpg] Hello, [COP26 logo] COP26 has started today in Glasgow and I am here with a delegation from the University of Nottingham with a message of hope. We face the greatest challenge of our time, but as I outlined in my recent blog, a common purpose and shared determination to deliver innovative, bold solutions can change the world. I?m writing to you, as one of the University?s key civic partners, to invite you to join us as we share our ideas and initiatives around tackling climate change over the course of this important global event. Research at the University of Nottingham is global in its impact and its ambitions, and is helping deliver the technologies that will drive a sustainable future. Take a moment to explore our COP26 campaign page, where you can find blogs, podcasts and information on all our activities associated with the conference. In particular, I am excited by the ground-breaking work we are doing in the field of aviation, with our new Aerospace Propulsion Facility a crucial investment in making Net Zero Aviation a reality. But it?s not all about the world-wide scale. Our work is having an impact locally, supporting Nottingham to reach its Net Zero 2028 target and working with Nottingham?s citizens and civic partners to meet this shared challenge. Through the Universities for Nottingham initiative, both of Nottingham?s universities, and Councils across Nottinghamshire have now rolled out the Green Rewards app. We are joining up individual efforts across the County and showing how even the smallest actions towards living sustainably can add up to make a big difference. You can add your personal actions to the collective effort by downloading it today on the App Store or on the play store. For COP26, we are running a series of events around the city that aim to engage with people of all backgrounds and ages. We believe that climate change should be on everyone?s agenda and, by coming together, we will see change happen. I?m delighted to share more details of these events with you below. Green Light in the City Brought to you by a cross-Nottingham collaboration, this pop-up exhibition will see an empty city centre shop unit transformed by the city's two universities, the City Council and our partner organisations into a community engagement space. We will asking the public to engage with us on the key question of our time: how can we live more sustainably? We hope this event becomes a blueprint for community engagement in the city. Primary Parliament At this exciting event running from 9-11 November, pupils from over 20 Nottingham schools will have the chance to engage with the challenge of climate change and hear from academics about their research on this topic. They will be invited to respond by creating an invention to support Nottingham to its net zero target, and to think of themselves as the researchers of the future. Led by Professor Sara Goodacre of the School of Life Sciences, this event is a collaboration between the University of Nottingham and the city council, and part of the Festival of Social Science. The University of Nottingham and Nottingham and Notts Refugee Forum, in collaboration with sociologist Dr Roda Madziva and Ignite!, will create a performance piece for Nottingham Refugee Week in 2022. The first set of sessions, held in half term, saw families recreate the aromas of home cooked meals as an introduction to the topic. They shared authentic techniques and inherited recipes, learning from each other in a supported environment. Festival of Social Science This year?s Festival of Social Science includes several online events related to the climate change agenda which are open to the public. * Forced Marriage and climate change - join Dr Helen McCabe and guests for a panel discussion exploring how rates of forced marriage in South Asia and East Africa are linked to extreme weather events resulting from climate change. * The University Getaway: A Sustainable Tourism Space ? Dr Brendan Canavan of Nottingham University Business School invites you to learn about how you can help make the tourist industry more sustainable next time you go on holiday. * Growing Green Films: Young filmmakers building a sustainable industry ? Dr Leora Hadas of the Department of Cultural, Media and Visual Studies brings together advocates, educators and emerging film makers to discuss a greener future for the film industry. We hope to see you at one of our events. Green Light in the City The Green Light project aims to develop pop-up spaces in the city centre to encourage creativity, curiosity and community engagement over the coming years. Our first collaborative space (the old Tokenhouse shop on Bridlesmith Gate) will open in mid-November 2021 to end-December and will have a focus on Climate Change, to tie in with COP 26. We hope a variety of organisations (big and small!) will get involved and provide creative sessions, talks and workshops! We invite you to complete this short expression of interest form, so that we can build a consortium of individuals and organisations who are keen to engage families, young people and the wider public with creative learning activities that can help us all reflect on Climate Change, our hopes for the future and positive individual and collective actions. The first Green Light space will have core opening hours of 12-3pm, Wednesday-Sunday. There will be permanent displays and activities available during these times with information and inspiration from both of Nottingham's Universities. We are open to suggestions for workshop leaders, speakers and displays both within the core opening hours or outside these times for ticketed events or workshops. Could you... * Contribute creative activities that help people consider climate change? * Help provide a welcome for visitors? * Share ideas with the public, explain and discuss, help and support (including those who may be anxious about the climate change) * Develop social media content to tell the story of the Green Light project If so, please complete the expression of interest form here For more information, email greenlight2028 at gmail.com. The fabulous Nottingham charity, Ignite!, are the leaseholders for the first Green Light pop up; supported by Carbon Neutral 2028 team at Nottingham City Council, University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and ChalleNGe, Nottingham's Cultural Education Partnership. Participating organisations include: City Arts, Hockley Hustle (and this list will grow!)
