From Maria.Richards at nottingham.ac.uk Wed Jul 7 16:51:53 2021 From: Maria.Richards at nottingham.ac.uk (Maria Richards) Date: Wed, 7 Jul 2021 15:51:53 +0000 Subject: [Public-engagement] Opportunity to take part in Skateboarding in the City Festival - 27 Sept to 3 Oct In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Dear Colleagues, I have had a request from one of our partners to promote an opportunity to take place in a project they are running with Skate Nottingham - We're working with Skate Nottingham for their Skateboarding in the City Festival, which will be 27 Sept - 3 Oct, and we've got a grant from UKRI to support the engagement of researchers in the programme. We're keen to open it up as broadly as possible - there could be links with psychology (failure, resilience), materials science (skateboard/obstacle design), sociology (youth culture), sports science (skills, muscles), medicine (twisted ankles and broken bones), physics (momentum, tricks)... We think there could be some really fun content here and a really interesting way of doing public engagement. Audiences could be children & young people or adults and formats could be workshops for young people, activities at skate spots, exhibitions/installations, videos, online content. We can support people to develop their ideas with us and with local skaters, and cover costs for expenses and materials. The festival will include a skateboarding competition, film showings and hopefully the unveiling of the new Sussex Street skate spot (near the new college around Broadmarsh). If you are interested in learning more please email Megan Shore from Ignite! megan at ignitefutures.org.uk by 30 July. This event presents an unprecedented opportunity for UK researchers working on issues related to climate change to bring their work to the attention of governments and policy makers, and to influence the decisions that will shape the world's response to the climate crisis in the coming years. Nottingham is home to a huge and diverse range of climate-related research with enormous social, technological, environmental and health-related implications. This work has great potential to influence climate policy and change public understandings of the issues at stake. To raise the profile of this wide-ranging and important work, we are therefore planning a digital campaign to run in the lead-up to and during the COP26 conference, focusing on the valuable research contributions coming from all corners of our university. We are currently agreeing the budget for this campaign. The campaign will be built around two groups of content: one focusing on Net Zero Aviation as a strategic strength of the University, and one seeking to draw on a wide range of research to showcase the breadth of our contribution to tackling climate change. The Institute for Policy and Engagement is looking for potential contributions to this campaign, to form the basis of content to be promoted and shared with targeted stakeholders as well as a broad public audience. Formats might include, for instance, a blog post focused on the policy implications of your work or a podcast interview. Institute staff will be available to support you to develop your work into a format suitable for the campaign. We welcome applications from any school or faculty, and are keen to ensure as broad a representation of the University's academic expertise as possible as part of the campaign. If you're interested in having your work included in this exciting campaign, please email theinstitute at nottingham.ac.uk by Friday 30 July, letting us know: * Your school * The focus of your research * Why this matters to the climate change agenda, and if applicable what the policy implications are (i.e. what you think governments need to do, on the basis of your research, in order to tackle climate change) * Any audiences you are particularly keen to engage COP26 is a global event so the communications field will be crowded. We are therefore particularly keen to include content that stands out through their innovative methods or "unexpected" contribution to the climate change challenge. Given the global nature of the event, content that is aimed at audiences extending beyond the UK will also be welcome. We will confirm which projects we would like to include in the campaign early August, at which point we will be in touch with successful applicants to discuss format and content creation. If you have any questions, please contact Chris Sims, Deputy Director of the Institute.
