Update from the Institute for Policy and Engagement

Over the summer we have been busy planning for the upcoming academic year and have many exciting new initiatives we look forward to sharing with you. The next offer is our In the Limelight training programme, full details given below. We are also drawing up the full programme for Nottingham Digital Engaged 2020, a two week virtual series of events that will replace our usual annual conference. This takes place in November and we will share full details in the next issue.

Our popular Science Public Lectures continue to take place monthly, with our next talk being delivered by Darren Walsh from the School of Chemistry on 15th October (email Charlotte Lee<mailto:charlotte.lee at nottingham.ac.uk> for further details).

Rachael Pearson, Head of Public Engagement, left the Institute at the end of July. She did a wonderful job in helping to establish us as a source of information and support for public engagement activity and we wish her all the best on her next adventure.

The Institute for Policy and Engagement together with Lakeside Arts are excited to announce the launch of In the Limelight<https://www.lakesidearts.org.uk/research/public-engagement-with-research/in-the-limelight.html>, a new public engagement training programme for UoN research staff. Over the course of a month, with mentoring from a team of experts, you will learn how to develop an idea for a live session and deliver this from the Djanogly Theatre stage. The performance will be recorded with support from a full technical crew and broadcast on a platform that best suits your intended audience.

This represents an incredible opportunity to share your research with the public and continue to connect at a time when face to face engagement is not possible.

Building Back Better: Public Engagement with Research<https://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/whats-new/news/networking-event-national-forum-public-engagement-with-stem>
15 October, 1-4 pm, online
The National Forum for Public Engagement in STEM<https://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/nccpe-projects-and-services/nccpe-projects/national-forum-public-engagement-stem> will be hosting its third bi-annual networking event. They are hosting an online conference event, that will focus on how we build back better for more effective engagement with research. To get the most from this event, they suggest attendees either have responsibility for and oversight of public engagement as a key part of their role or take formal and informal responsibility for championing and embedding public engagement across their organisation and/or community. They aim through this event to provide the opportunity to learn more about the activity of the National Forum and to feed into collective priorities moving forward.
Items for discussion include:

  * Sharing and mobilising learning about public engagement during a global health emergency. Help us identify and understand ‘what works’ when communicating science in a crisis. How can we mobilise our networks as quickly as possible to share learning? How are we adapting our activities and venues for social distancing, working with our partners in new ways?
  * How can we build back better from COVID-19? What are the outcomes that we’re looking for? What partnerships do we need to generate these outcomes? How can we help develop those? How can funders better direct their resources to build the future we want to see?
  * There will also be a small number of workshops focused on the work of the STEM Forum. Including in areas such as diversifying routes in public engagement careers, place-based engagement, public engagement with climate change and developments in audience monitoring and science capital.
Places are limited, in order to register your interest please complete the expression of interest form here<https://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/building-back-better-public-engagement-with-research> by 12th September. All places will be confirmed by 27th September.

Funding Opportunities

Biochemical Society's Scientific Outreach Grants<https://www.biochemistry.org/education/public-engagement/scientific-outreach-grants/>
The Biochemical Society’s Scientific Outreach Grants are currently open and will be accepting applications until 24 September 2020. This popular scheme supports the development of scientific outreach and public engagement activities that communicate the excitement of molecular bioscience to young people and the community with sums of up to £1000. They accept applications from anywhere in the world, and you don’t need to be a member of the Biochemical Society to apply.

Get in touch with education at biochemistry.org<mailto:education at biochemistry.org> if you have any questions, or would like to chat about an application.

Public Engagement Sparks Award<https://stfc.ukri.org/public-engagement/public-engagement-grants/pe-funding-opportunities/stfc-public-engagement-spark-awards/>
The Science and Technology Facilities Council invites applications for its public engagement spark awards. These support programmes of novel public engagement that focus on a topic within the council’s remit, which includes astronomy, solar and planetary science, particle physics, particle astrophysics, cosmology, nuclear physics and accelerator science, or align to the science and technology work of the council’s national and international laboratories and facilities. Applications that highlight the social, ethical, and economic benefits of research are welcomed. Applicants are encouraged to propose novel or innovative approaches towards engagement, and to propose engagement with audiences considered to have low science capital. They are also explicitly invited to work with the wonder initiative’s target audience of eight to 14 year olds and their families and carers from the 40 per cent most socioeconomically-deprived areas of the UK. Digital content is only funded as part of a wider engagement programme.
Applicant organisations must be based in the UK and must have audited accounts. The target audiences of the project must be primarily UK residents. Almost anyone may apply, including grant-funded researchers, STFC scientists and engineers, facility users, schools, museums, science communicators and amateur astronomy groups. Each application must include a researcher in an STFC-funded area of science or technology.
Awards are worth up to £15,000 each, closing date for this round is 22nd October.
