I?m delighted to say that our permanent Director, Stephen Meek joins us from the Cabinet Office at the beginning of September. I?m sure you?ll all give him a very warm welcome, both to the sector and to Nottingham. My teams and I will continue to work with Stephen in supporting the implementation phase and launch of the Institute over the next few months. This August?s update summarises some of the activity that has taken place over the last few months? and sets out some of what is coming-up from the Institute over the next year. Finally, I would like to sign-off this update by reiterating my belief that the success of the Institute will be as a result of constant, inventive and focused collaboration with colleagues and departments across the University. Civic University Commission: The Nottingham civic dinner University of Nottingham Global Dialogues Thailand [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/23f9e664ba0b0620d1f884ed5/images/8ce16ee2-3a32-465a-a137-3b906b5bef4d.jpg] The national Civic University Commission, Chaired by former Head of the UK Civil Service Lord Bob Kerslake visited Nottingham as part of its evidence gathering process, as the University has been heavily involved in establishing and shaping the Commission. The Institute hosted a dinner for the Commissioners and around 80 senior civic stakeholders and staff from both the University and NTU ? with tables themed according to different dimensions of the university?s civic role. The topic at the sell-out event was Ideas vs borders: can universities continue to be global in the new geopolitical era? Speakers include the British Ambassador to Thailand, the Vice-Chancellor and the President of Enterprise Thailand. The event was part of the University?s Malaysia/ ASEAN Reputation Campaign. Recently praised by Bill Gates as ?essential reading for policymakers?, the event was Chaired by the School of Economics? Professor Paul Mizen and was attended by around 100 students, researchers and local policymakers in Highfield House. Event production was delivered in by Lakeside Arts. The Institute hosted a lunch for public engagement practitioners from across ASEAN at the Petrosains Science Discovery Centre in the Petronas Towers. The was held in conjunction with the British Council?s FameLab global competition. Martyn was also joined by HE Vicki Treadell CMG, British High Commissioner to Malaysia as his scientific assistant for a live experiment as part of Going Global 2018. In collaboration with: External Relations (Communications and Advocacy, Digital and Marketing, International Student Recruitment), Office for Global Engagement, UNMC Institute team updates We are pleased to announce that Stephen Meek, a senior civil servant, has been appointed as the Director of the University of Nottingham?s Institute for Policy and Engagement joining us from the Cabinet Office Stephen?s previous roles include board-level positions at both the Departments for Education and Communities and Local Government. His career began at HM Treasury, and has included spells at the Local Government Association and helping Cambridgeshire and Peterborough develop their successful devolution proposals. He is a member of REF Main Panel C and has worked extensively on developing the research/ policy interface across Whitehall. Chris Sims has also joined as the Head of Global Policy Impact. His background includes work for the FCO in South Korea and the Netherlands, establishing the City and Guilds Policy Office in India, and roles at Stonewall, Teach First and the Big Lottery Fund. M?d?lina St?lniceanu will be working at 0.5FTE as the Institute?s Project Officer, with the other half of her role remaining in the Political and Public Affairs Unit. The Institute is currently recruiting a Head of Public Engagement, with interviews in early September. Recruitment of the Institute Coordinator and Institute Administrator will also take place over the coming months and bring the team up to its full compliment. Introducing the Policy and Engagement Academy [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/23f9e664ba0b0620d1f884ed5/images/e0014980-1a06-4cbb-aadf-b532aecfec8e.png] The Institute is teaming up with the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) and international policy consultancy On Think Tanks to launch the first programmes that will form part of the Institute's new Policy and Engagement Academy. The Institute will provide the University with a home for the coordination of policy impact and public engagement-related training, masterclasses, advice and guidance; with programmes for researchers and professional staff across all Faculties and all campuses. It will work with colleagues in departments such as the Graduate School and Leadership Management Academy to coordinate its programmes. This first year will see two programmes being run initially. The first is the Policy and Engagement Academy Expertise Programme - targeted at those colleagues across the University (both academic and professional service staff) who are responsible for supporting others in developing policy impact and public engagement activity. Learning will be a mixture of webinars and 'what does this look like at Nottingham' workshops, delivered to a cohort of around 25-30 in Highfield House. We will be issuing a call for participants following the Nottingham Engaged Conference on September 2017, at which taster sessions from NCCPE and On Think Tanks will be provided for all attendees. The second programme will be the Policy and Engagement Academy Strategic Leaders Programme, which will be aimed at senior academic leadership across the University. Topics will include the development of public engagement strategies, thinking of impact as a campaign and sessions on research reputation and engagement delivered by senior university and external practitioners. In collaboration with: External Relations (Communications and Advocacy, Digital and Marketing, WP, Lakeside Arts), Research & Innovation, A-PVCs, Human Resources Funding The Institute successfully piloted a number of funding schemes last university financial year, including the Policy Impact Train Fare Fund and the HERMES Strategic Public Engagement fund. This coming year it will be working with the Nottingham Impact Accelerator, the ESRC Impact Accelerator Account, the Governance & Public Policy RPA and other budget holders for policy impact and public engagement support to provide, where possible, a single point of advice, access and allocation in these areas. All of those featured in this guide are interested in working with policymakers, with the media, with industry and with other researchers on developing opportunities and aim to make an impact on, important debates within the region. The guide sets clearly and simply out the industry, media and policy engagement credentials of each researcher and it is being distributed across Westminster, Whitehall and the wider policy community in the UK and beyond. Engaging with Parliament Workshop This event focused on giving evidence in formal settings, such as Select Committees, with the aim of helping female academics become more confident at sharing their expertise in policy environments. The guest speakers were Lilian Greenwood MP, Labour MP for Nottingham South, and Professor Sarah Sharples, Associate Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research & Knowledge Exchange and Professor of Human Factors in the Faculty of Engineering. How can being on an advisory group have benefits for your career? * 5 November: Blogging - how writing an opinion piece can amplify news of your research * 22 November: One-day Making the Headlines conference, run by the University Press Office, including breakout sessions on the Globelynx camera ? the miniature newsroom on campus, social media, blogging and the art of an opinion piece, and vlogging In collaboration with: External Relations (Communications and Advocacy) --------- REF 2021 Policy Impact Initiative Our Head of Global Policy Impact, Chris Sims has been working with the University's Impact Manager, Christina Mellor and Faculty Impact Officers to identify those impact case studies for the next REF that have a strong connection to policymakers and government. Where possible, he will then be looking to work with researchers to either increase the impact of their research; to amplify or increase awareness of this impact; or to support high-quality evidence-gathering and pathway development. Chris will be supported in this work by Research & Innovation colleagues and both the Political and Public Affairs Unit and the Media Team. Institute sponsoring Policy Award This award recognises outstanding academics based on all campuses whose research findings and communications have influenced the formation or implementation of public policy. This may be through working with politicians, civil servants or any other type of policymakers or influencers at any geographical location. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday 22 November 2018, in front of over 300 guests. Global-Civic Fellows The Institute is teaming up with the GaPP RPA and the Civic and Regional Board to launch a pilot scheme for three short "Global-Civic Fellows". The funding, of around ?15,000, is for University of Nottingham researchers to work with a Nottingham-based civic partner. Together, they will identify an international policymaker and academic whose work in another city in a particular area is likely to be particularly useful and relevant to that area in Nottingham. The funding will cover travel and a week's programme of meetings, discussions and engagement with both researchers and civic stakeholders. The fund will be administered by Chris Sims, with input from Simon Roberts, Alex Miles and Liz Lesquereux. These have been made possible by the Nottingham Impact Accelerator and the HERMES Scheme. The Public Engagement Network has helped allocate the funding for projects such as the Festival of Science and Curiosity, the University's Family Discovery Day, the Wellcome Trust Prime Scholars Showcase at the National Videogame Arcade and Science in the Park. Other updates Resources and guidance for policy impact and public engagement The Institute will be refreshing the University's resources for policy impact and public engagement, including hosting a live and updateable prezi map of network members and those across the University who have support for policy impact and public engagement as part of their roles. The Institute?s events will take place all over campus, but there will be a focus on developing a high-profile series of activity for internal and external audiences from out of Highfield that will begin this year.
