Science is leaving the lab and heading to the pubs and bars of Nottingham as one of the world?s largest festivals of public science returns to the city, and tickets for this popular event have been launched today (9 April). The three day ?Pint of Science? festival has become a popular fixture on the event calendar and kicks off on the 14th May. This year?s event promises to be bigger and better than ever before with more than 60 scientists giving talks and demonstrations on a range of fascinating subjects including: flying spiders, virtual reality, quantum physics with heavy metal and virtual reality at the airport. Global event Researchers from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University are joining scientists from around the world for this event which takes place in nearly 300 cities across 21 countries. They are bringing a unique line up of talks on a range of fascinating topics to pubs across the city, including: The Lacehouse, The Canalhouse, Rough Trade, The Waterfront, Bunkers Hill, The Angel Microbrewery and The National Videogame arcade. This year?s festival has expanded on last year?s success and will be covering a range of themes: ?Planet Earth?, ?Tech Me Out?, ?Our Society?, ?Our Body?, ?Atoms to Galaxies?, ?Beautiful mind? and a new special theme focussed around the science of Nottingham called ?Nottingham frontiers?. Alongside the main talks, each evening will also include a range of science-inspired activities including real scientific data, comedy, quizzes, games, geeky puzzles, engaging stories and virtual reality demons. Getting the facts right Hannah Tomlin is a Pharmacy PhD student from the University of Nottingham and is one of the event co-ordinators, she said: ?Pint of science is a brilliant way to communicate real research and encourage non-scientists to feel more comfortable understanding and discussing complex scientific concepts. This also helps people distinguish science fact from science fiction with stories they hear in the media!? Pint of Science was established six years ago by a group of UK-based postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers and has grown into one of the world?s biggest science festivals. The founders, Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin, have brought a personal touch to science, giving everyone the chance to meet the people behind the incredible research taking place across the globe. "There is so much fascinating research happening right under our noses that we don't know about? says festival co-founder Dr Paul. ?Some can get lost in translation leading to fake news. Pint of Science allows people direct access to inspiring scientists and encourages open discussion, all in the most familiar of British places, the pub! Scientists drink pints too - they really aren't that different!" Creative Reactions: Creative Reactions is also returning to Nottingham as part of the festival. This is a programme where artists and scientists partner to inspire each other and produce incredible artworks inspired by scientists? research, such as poetry centred on quantum physics, improv comedy based on scientists short monologues, temporary tattoos inspired by sustainability and much more. These works break down barriers and encourage creativity for both parties and the results are breath-taking. Tickets are available from the Pint of Science website (pintofscience.co.uk), with each evening costing just ?4. ?Ends? Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey have been the major recipients of displaced refugees either into camps or, as informal settlers in the poorer peripheral areas of large cities such as Beirut, Ankara and Amman. Within this volatile context, women and children are particularly affected, bearing the brunt of displacement, poverty and gender-based violence. To counter poverty and dependency, micro-entrepreneurship is deemed increasingly important; it offers opportunities for women to use traditional skills to create artisan goods and services and so create incomes and improve status. During this seminar, Professor Susan Marlow (Haydn Green Institute, The University of Nottingham); Dr Haya Al Dajani (Futures Entrepreneurship Centre, The University of Plymouth); and Dr Nasser Yassin, (American University Beirut) will present evidence from an Economic and Social Research Council & Department for International Development funded intervention project regarding the efficacy of micro-enterprise to change lives. Working with refugee women in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey and a range of intermediary organisations, they critically evaluate the potential of micro-enterprise to generate income, offer independence and empowerment to women whose lives have been devastated by conflict, violence and forced displacement. Spaces are limited, and based on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you would like to attend the event, please register your attendance here: http://bit.ly/HGISeminar. Following the seminar, there will be drinks and canapes served in the Ingenuity Centre Atrium. If you have any specific dietary requirements, please contact Elizabeth Smith at lizzie.smith at nottingham.ac.uk. From 19th to 23rd September, we?re bringing together more than 140 speakers and 100 exhibitors at ExCeL to create an unrivalled atmosphere and energy, packed with thought-provoking talks, ground-breaking discoveries, interactive experiences, workshops and performances. https://live.newscientist.com A number of university public engagement teams have chosen to work with us in previous years to help researchers access a high quality platform for their engagement and to benefit from exposure to a very lively and engaging festival. There are several ways to get involved? ? You can nominate a speaker (or put yourself forward) by using this form: https://live.newscientist.com/nomination-form-2018 ? You can book a stand by getting in touch with Jacqui McCarron (details below) There is a charge for exhibiting at the festival and a small honorarium for speakers. We are really keen to support researchers to participate, and to provide opportunities for them to involve some of their priority audiences. For this reason we are offering members of the NCCPE network who exhibit 40 complimentary tickets rather than the standard 20. These are often used by universities to bring disadvantaged students and are in addition to exhibitor passes. If you are involved in public engagement and want to showcase your research or university, please contact Jacqui McCarron on either jacqui.mccarron at newscientist.com or 020 7611 1248 quoting NCCPE40. The NCCPE is working with the STFC to launch Wonder Match, a series of partnership-building events that are designed to support community organisations and STFC-funded scientists and engineers to explore collaborations that will support diverse audiences to engage with STFC science and technology. The events help community organisations and researchers meet to develop project ideas together, and as part of the event participants can apply for a small amount of funding to enable them to develop their partnership approach. We're really keen to get the word out about this opportunity, so if you're able to pass on the details of the Leicester event to any colleagues or relevant contacts that would be fantastic. We're specifically hoping to attract: * Community organisations (charities, social enterprises, schools, museums etc) who work with young people and/or underserved communities * Anyone who works on an STFC-funded project or uses an STFC facility More information can be found on the NCCPE website and applications for the Leicester event can be made via this webform. I've also attached a document containing some customised blurbs for academics or community organisations - please do feel free to amend and use these as you wish.
