People can echolocate by making sonar emissions (e.g. mouth clicks, finger snaps, cane taps), and by interpreting their acoustic reflections from the environment. Some blind individuals have developed an amazing ability to use mouth-click based echolocation
to interpret and navigate their environment. In my talk I will describe recent preliminary research from our lab that has investigated the clicks that expert echolocators use for echolocation. I will also describe an experiment from our lab that directly compared
people’s echolocation performance for detecting an object with mouth clicks to their performance using a loudspeaker. We found that the use of a loudspeaker may enable people to perform equally well, or even better as when using their own mouth-clicks, and
that acoustic features of mouth-clicks were related to performance. I will also describe some preliminary findings providing potential insights into how people may sample space for example to determine the shape of a sound reflecting object.<o:p></o:p></p>
