Message-ID: Forwarded from the ALT mail list: Please reply to M.Wald at SOTON.AC.UK and copy in the METAL list ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Colleagues I am very interested in what you and your colleagues would like to be able to do with video and audio recordings that you cannot do easily at the moment. What problems or issues do you have that the use of video or audio recordings introduce or that the use of video or audio recordings could help you solve? Please don't let your ideas and wish list be restricted by what you think is possible as what you might think would be impossible might actually be possible :-) I was responsible for the JISC funded free web based application Synote (synote.org) that won the Times Higher Education Outstanding ICT Initiative of the Year Award in 2011 . The original version of Synote was developed in 2008 and is still freely available but the changes to browsers and audio and video formats have caused some limitations and so I and my team have developed many new possibilities that we use at Southampton but have not yet made available to others. We are very interested in what people would like to do and what problems they would like to solve so we can make the next version of Synote as useful to as many people as possible. If you would find it helpful to know some of the things that Synote can do that people have found useful then the list includes: Using any recordings with a public URL Automatic speech recognition or manual transcription and captioning of recordings Editing errors in Automatic speech recognition captions either individually or collaboratively by students (e.g. Crowd sourcing) Time synchronising comments, notes, tags, links, images with the recordings Searching the transcript and notes for the recordings and replaying just the relevant sections Quizzes and Polls time synchronised with the recordings with analytics of the results Selecting parts of recordings and replaying them in any order Collaborating online through sharing notes and recordings Online discussions of each others' notes/comments Printing out or exporting any comments, notes, captions, images etc. with timings I look forward to hearing your ideas and problems and hopefully solving them in the next version of Synote regards Mike Professor Mike Wald Professorial Fellow (Education) University of Southampton ######################################################################## -- A discussion list for members of the Association for Learning Technology (ALT). Description: Within the teaching space conceptual descriptions are usually either vocal or presented using 2 dimensional slides and video. However, a deeper understanding can often be obtained by handing objects. These objects can be used to prompt conversations or to gain a deeper understanding of function. During this session we will bridge the virtual and physical dimensions of the webinar. Be ready to interact and bring along an object that typifies the way you teach or the subject itself. We hope you will be able to join us.
