<p class="MsoNormal">We are deeply saddened to inform you of the loss of our colleague and friend Christine Keitel-Kreidt, a great leader in our field. Christine played a fundamental role in promoting mathematics education as an international research field.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" class="">Christine was Professor emerita of Mathematics Education at the Freie University, Berlin, where she also served as Vice-President.<o:p class=""></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" class="">In the 1970s, Christine started as research fellow at the renowned Max-Planck-Institute for Educational Research in Berlin, where she worked on theoretical and practical approaches to curriculum development.
In 1980, she became Director of an influential teacher education project at the Institute for Didactics of Mathematics in Bielefeld, where she received a doctorate at the Faculty of Mathematics. For her studies in curriculum reforms in mathematics, Christine
earned a Habilitation at Faculty of Mathematics, University of Technology Berlin. In acknowledgement of her work, Christine received an A. v. Humboldt-Scholarship Award for Research and Capacity Building in South Africa and Honorary Doctorates from University
of Southampton, UK, and the University of Shumen, Bulgaria.<o:p class=""></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" class="">Christine combined her interest in critical mathematics education for all with a passion for gathering like-minded colleagues and was instrumental in establishing an enduring community of researchers interested
in mathematics as a social practice and the sociology of mathematics education. In pursuing her work on gender, ethnicity, social class and the politics of schooling, the difficulties faced by students and teachers in mathematics classrooms were always the
major concern. Christine was well-known for endorsing qualitative methodologies in comparative studies on mathematics classroom practice, in particular within the Learner’s Perspective Study.<o:p class=""></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" class="">Christine’s engagement in mathematics education as an international research field was boundless, for example her editorial leadership and contributions in the International Handbooks in Mathematics Education.
