From Geoffrey.Wake at nottingham.ac.uk Mon Feb 5 14:09:13 2024 From: Geoffrey.Wake at nottingham.ac.uk (Geoffrey Wake) Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2024 14:09:13 +0000 Subject: [Maths-Education] Sad news from Nottingham Message-ID: Dear colleagues, I write from Nottingham on behalf of us all here with the very sad news that Hugh Burkhardt sadly died on Saturday. Hugh has been an important part of the team here for many years - for way longer than I personally have had the privilege to work with him and those who have become friends and colleagues. Those who knew Hugh will know what an immense contribution he has made over many years to maths education here, more widely and, especially through ISDDE, internationally. He will be sadly missed, especially as he was so excited about recent developments here involving our Observatory for Mathematical Education and keen to make a contribution to this new (ad)venture. He had recently been working on developing a comprehensive history of mathematics education at Nottingham, documenting the work of the Shell Centre and more recent curriculum design engineering and our other research. We look forward to sharing that in the near future. His passing has been sudden, and those who know Hugh may take some solace in knowing that only on Friday evening he had dinner with friends at his favourite restaurant. No doubt with a fine glass of wine. Our thoughts are with his family, especially Jeanne and children, and we are thankful that we had the privilege to be part of his professional family and to have benefitted form his generous support for so long. I cant find the proceedings on line and I gave mine away to Loughborough years go. Does anyone remember him and have any info on his talk. I recall it was in a white church, and John Mason was particularly moved by it! Lovely to hear from people I have known since PME10. And to be reminded that I actually had a Discussion Group in PME27 with Steve Lerman, Robyn Jorgensen and Mike Askew. Something about social justice or other. Sadly all that is in the proceedings is his name?but ?.. It was Nainoa Thompson. John Mason remembered after 20 years!! And lots of people came up with proceedings ?. Find him on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nainoa_Thompson ?Charles Nainoa Thompson (born March 11, 1953, in Oahu, Hawaii[1]) is a Native Hawaiian navigator and the president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. He is best known as the first Hawaiian to practice the ancient Polynesian art of navigation since the 14th century, having navigated two double-hulled canoes (the H?k?le?a and the Hawai?iloa) from Hawai?i to other island nations in Polynesia without the aid of western instruments.? John tells me it was a ?Terrific talk about learning from experience not instruction? so here is something interesting?. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polynesian_navigation Best Wishes, in what is a rather sobering year for people who have been in Maths ed for a long time?
