Research Associate
Please note that the position closes for applications at 23.30pm on 28 March 2016.
The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) at Durham University aims to inform and improve education in two ways:
1. By providing educators and educational institutions with a body of world-class research to support evidence-based education practices, and
2. By providing cutting-edge assessment and monitoring systems which support learning through the provision of robust information on the ability, attitudes, potential and progress of young people.
CEM is looking to appoint a 0.5 FTE part-time Research Associate. The contract will be fixed term until 31 August 2017 and predominantly office-based with the possibility of some travel within the UK.
Please note that the salary is pro rata to the full time salary.
We are seeking a self-motivated and experienced individual to contribute to the IMAPs project (Investigating Mathematical Attainment and Progress), which is funded by the Nuffield Foundation. The main focus of the post includes the analysis of multiple, large-scale data sets. IMAPs is a joint project between CEM at Durham University, the Centre for Research in Mathematics Education (CRME) at the University of Nottingham and King's College London. The project aims to explore factors which contribute to the understanding of basic mathematical concepts and the extent to which any weaknesses in these areas contribute to the widening of the attainment gap. Further evaluative work on the effectiveness of, and the approaches to addressing low attainment in mathematics is also part of the project's wider remit, and will be addressed through some later quantitative and qualitative data gathering.
The successful applicant will require exceptional quantitative research skills and a comprehensive understanding of statistics. They will be responsible for the analysis of multiple, large-scale data sets which will be used to a) evaluate the quality and properties of new assessment instruments b) identify patterns in pupils' mathematics performance and c) predict future attainment of students. The successful applicant will also have experience of writing to an academic standard and will be expected to contribute to a planned schedule of academic publications, driven by their analyses of the data. S/he will be expected to possess a mature and flexible approach, be able to work independently, prioritising his/her own workload. Some knowledge of working with qualitative data would also be advantageous given the scope of the project.
