From N.Bretscher at ioe.ac.uk Fri Mar 4 11:33:38 2016 From: N.Bretscher at ioe.ac.uk (Nicola Bretscher) Date: Fri, 4 Mar 2016 11:33:38 +0000 Subject: [Maths-Education] Developing Pedagogy in Advanced Mathematics day conference - 25th April Message-ID: Dear all, We are pleased to invite you to the ?Developing Pedagogy in Advanced Mathematics? day conference on 25th April, 10.30-16.30 at UCL Institute of Education. The purpose of this day conference is to share research and good practice in developing new teachers to teach A-level and other level 3 mathematics. Researchers and initial teacher educators are invited to share their thoughts on the place of level 3 mathematics within pressured teacher education schedules and to communicate their research in this area. The IOE team will present research findings from two related projects: case studies of teaching A-level in early career, and an investigation of beginner teachers? skills in assessing semi-structured problems. IOE will also introduce materials from the new AMTEC* course, designed to support A-level mathematics pedagogy for early career teachers and freely available to other ITE providers from 2016-17. Registration for this event is FREE (including lunch and teas/coffees). We can also offer a grant towards reasonable incurred travel costs (second-class rail fare). However, please note that places and travel funding are limited, and a maximum will be stated in advance. To register, please complete the registration form at http://goo.gl/forms/XQyYluturI before 25th March 2016. If you would like to contribute a research talk or an account of developing practice, please submit an outline (up to 1000 characters) via the registration form. We would welcome contributions on: developing subject knowledge and pedagogy of particular topics; teaching for problem solving; behaviour for learning with 16-18 year olds; the relationship between level 3 (A Level or Core Maths) teaching and GCSE; assessment; mentoring beginning teachers. You can also register simply to attend. You will receive confirmation of the session place and travel grant shortly after 25th March. *For further details, or to find out about using our Advanced Mathematics Teaching for Early Career (AMTEC) course materials with new teachers, please contact Cathy Smith c.smith at ioe.ac.uk . The programme emphasises critical intervention in policy, practice and debate built through the study of a variety of academic disciplines. The long-established and highly regarded programme recruits every two years and is currently accepting applications to join the next cohort of students commencing in September 2016. Students are typically drawn from an array of disciplines including HE lecturing, teaching, inspection, nursing, social work, youth and community work, museum and gallery studies, and professionals working within institutes for social policy and planning. The Doctorate of Education sits within the Education and Social Research Institute at MMU. ESRI is one of the leading centres for applied educational research and evaluation. In the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise 67% of the Institute?s research was rated as ?worldleading? or ?internationally excellent, with 100% of our research Impact being rated ?world leading? or ?internationally excellent?. The Institute has an outstanding portfolio of research grants and publications, regularly organizes national and international seminars and workshops and other services to research. The course team includes most of the Institute?s twelve professors. ESRI is based at new Brooks Building on the Birley Campus in central Manchester. The programme seeks to place the student in a more critically informed relationship with current educational debates, particularly as they impact on notions of ?professionalism?. It is intended that such a critical platform will help them come to their own conclusions about what the implications are for their practice as professionals, and intervene in educational debates appropriately. Part A of the programme comprises ten study weekends and two student conferences over two years. Five assignments are completed, all focused on professionalism and research methods and linked to the student?s immediate professional concerns. Part B, the thesis element, comprises independent research, often in the student?s own work location, culminating in a thesis shaped around professional development and intervention. Students are encouraged to publish their work and past students have had an excellent record of moving to more senior positions during their studies. Entry Requirements Prospective students will ordinarily possess a masters degree and selection will also be based on an interview including discussion of a piece of recent writing. The principal criterion, however, is a demonstrated capacity to combine imaginative work-based research with contemporary theoretical analysis. Interviews will be taking place during spring/summer 2016. The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) at Durham University aims to inform and improve education in two ways: 1. By providing educators and educational institutions with a body of world-class research to support evidence-based education practices, and 2. By providing cutting-edge assessment and monitoring systems which support learning through the provision of robust information on the ability, attitudes, potential and progress of young people. CEM is looking to appoint a 0.5 FTE part-time Research Associate. The contract will be fixed term until 31 August 2017 and predominantly office-based with the possibility of some travel within the UK. Please note that the salary is pro rata to the full time salary. We are seeking a self-motivated and experienced individual to contribute to the IMAPs project (Investigating Mathematical Attainment and Progress), which is funded by the Nuffield Foundation. The main focus of the post includes the analysis of multiple, large-scale data sets. IMAPs is a joint project between CEM at Durham University, the Centre for Research in Mathematics Education (CRME) at the University of Nottingham and King's College London. The project aims to explore factors which contribute to the understanding of basic mathematical concepts and the extent to which any weaknesses in these areas contribute to the widening of the attainment gap. Further evaluative work on the effectiveness of, and the approaches to addressing low attainment in mathematics is also part of the project's wider remit, and will be addressed through some later quantitative and qualitative data gathering. The successful applicant will require exceptional quantitative research skills and a comprehensive understanding of statistics. They will be responsible for the analysis of multiple, large-scale data sets which will be used to a) evaluate the quality and properties of new assessment instruments b) identify patterns in pupils' mathematics performance and c) predict future attainment of students. The successful applicant will also have experience of writing to an academic standard and will be expected to contribute to a planned schedule of academic publications, driven by their analyses of the data. S/he will be expected to possess a mature and flexible approach, be able to work independently, prioritising his/her own workload. Some knowledge of working with qualitative data would also be advantageous given the scope of the project.
