Abstract
The Cornerstone Maths project, a collaboration between Stanford Research Institute and the London Knowledge Lab, has provided the context for the development of an approach to scaling-up key stage 3 students' access to powerful mathematical ideas expressed through specifically designed technology. The approach integrates teacher and student materials, technological resources and teachers' CPD around a set of replacement curriculum units on the key mathematical ideas of linear function, geometric similarity and algebraic expressions. Funding from the Nuffield Foundation is enabling us to research the nature of teachers' mathematical and pedagogical knowledge development as they begin to integrate the curriculum units in their classroom practices.
In this seminar, I will outline the aims and objectives of this research and we will explore tasks from the curriculum unit on algebraic expressions as a means to critique the proposed methodology, which is being designed to probe the learning of the 200+ teachers' involved in the study.
