Mathematics should be understood in the widest possible sense to cover all aspects of mathematics, including number, pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and the full range of applications of mathematics. The conference examines learning and teaching throughout the life span, from the most basic to the most advanced topics and for the full range of learners, including people with dyscalculia and other maths learning difficulties, gifted learners and mathematicians. This should lead to cross-fertilisation between different areas of learning and teaching. The conference is also highly interdisciplinary. In addition to mathematicians, it should be of interest amongst others to psychologists, teachers, pedagogical and educational experts, engineers, scientists and social scientists. Confirmed invited speakers: Bill Barton (University of Auckland) Dame Celia Hoyles DBE (The Institute of Education, University of London) Colin Jones (University of Tasmania) Ros Sutherland (University of Bristol) Claire Trott (Loughborough University) The conference is organised into the following four tracks, with the list of topics under each track illustrative rather than exclusive: Motivation and maths anxiety ? Approaches to increasing motivation and self confidence ? Overcoming maths anxiety ? Why learn maths: relevance, context and applications ? The use of social networking to provide mutual support and increase engagement ? Using the media to promote mathematics and improve its image ? The learner's and the teacher's perspective Inclusive practice and learners' particular requirements ? Learners with specific learning difficulties ? Ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity and the learning and teaching requirements ? Gender issues and gender sensitive learning and teaching ? Mature learners and returning to maths in later life ? Blind learners and non-visual representation of mathematics ? Gifted learners ? Maths learning for specialists and non-specialists Effective practice: what does and does not work ? International comparisons ? Case studies ? Content and curricula ? Assessment, teaching and learning approaches ? Training and resources for teachers ? Less traditional approaches, such as project based learning, peer supported learning, microlearning and mobile learning The use of technology: ? The use of ICT, new technologies and tools ? On-line learning, blended learning and traditional classrooms ? Mobile learning apps ? High tech and traditional approaches Submission of papers and proposals for special thematic sessions was invited to the above tracks. In addition proposals were invited for working sessions to develop working groups on recommendations on particular topics related to the conference theme. Conference Fees: Early Bird Fees* IMA Member ?280 Non IMA Member ?375 IMA Student ?185 Non-IMA Student ?195 Early Bird Fees* will be available until Monday 11 May 2015, after which the fees will be: IMA Member: ?300 Non-IMA Member: ?395 IMA Student: ?205 Non-IMA Student: ?215 Conference Dinner on night of 11 June: ?45 *Early Bird Fees must be paid by Monday 11 May otherwise the higher price will be implemented. Bizarrely two movies have come out recently, one called "X+Y" and the other "X/Y" (see attached). One is mathematical (all about the International Olympiad), the other definitely not! Can we assume that "X?Y" and "X?Y" will come next? Please contact the editor Paul Ernest directly via the email address p.ernest at ex.ac.uk with submissions or queries. This free-to-access journal is widely read world-wide by students and researchers in mathematics education and adjacent areas and received well over 100,000 hits in total (with individual issues receiving up to 10,000 hits) before the hit counters were removed. Past issues can be viewed at http://www.people.ex.ac.uk/PErnest/ http://www.people.ex.ac.uk/PErnest/ Articles are sought that are either theory or concept rich contributions to mathematics education research or that have a philosophical slant or contribution. This can be papers on philosophical aspects of mathematics (e.g., the ethics, ontology, aesthetics, epistemology or other philosophical perspectives of mathematics), or reflections on or contributions to mathematics education from such philosophical perspectives. Contributions bringing sociological, linguistic, anthropological, psychological, political, humanistic, spiritual or historical perspectives to bear on mathematics or mathematics education are potentially acceptable too. Contributions are welcomed from students of mathematics education, philosophy of mathematics or related disciplines, as well as faculty, staff, and others -- from relative newcomers to established researchers. The journal also welcomes relevant articles, conference papers that have already been published if you wish to reach a wider or different audience (provided you clear copyright), as well as relevant postgraduate assignments, dissertations or theses. The journal leaves copyright ownership in the hands of its authors. A new section is planned to include lectures in powerpoint, PDF or other accessible formats to share presentations that may or may not have been written up as full papers but provide a quick overview of a perspective or argument. Please consider sending in your presentations for this experimental section. It is planned to publish The Philosophy of Mathematics Education Journal no. 29 in the Summer of 2015 (Northern hemisphere). There are no tight formatting rules. Please model submissions on standard academic paper conventions so that they look similar to past papers.
