The hotel is in the most favoured and beautiful bay along the Balkan Adriatic coast and is easily accessible from Dubrovnik airport in Croatia and Tivot airport in Montenegro. Catch a glimpse of paradise at: http://www.hunguesthotels.hu/en/hotel/herceg_novi/hunguest_hotel_sun_resort/ . The title/theme of the conference will be: The Future of Mathematics Education in a Connected World. Our eleven previous conferences since 1999, held by the Maths Education into the 21st Century Project, were renowned for their friendly and productive atmosphere, and were attended by many innovative /movers and shakers/ from around the world. We now welcome proposals for papers and workshops in all areas of innovation in mathematics, science, computing and statistics education. We would especially like to help research students/lecturers by offering free double-blind peer review for formal research papers sent to us in good time by registered participants. Please indicate below if you are interested in this possibility and I will send you full details of deadlines. The Proceedings will be published as a DVD for each participant, and will also be available on-line. In addition there is a possibility of selected papers being published as a book after the conference. The Early Bird Registration Fee (before February 1st, 2014) will be (per person) 355 euro for double/twin share and 420 euro for single accommodation. This will cover all conference documents and social events, five nights B&B accommodation and all meals and coffee/tea breaks, except on two evenings participants will be free to enjoy dinner at the local waterfront restaurants and in the charming old town of Herceg Novi. Thank you to all who sent us previous feedback, it would be most helpful now to hear from you if you are planning to attend. If so please reply to this email at alan at cdnalma.poznan.pl with answers below: I plan to attend definitely.......... probably.........., possibly........... I am planning to present a paper with the provisional title......................................... and would be interested in double blind peer review, please indicate Yes or No.......... The First Announcement will be sent to you later and will contain full conference details. We look forward to meeting you in Montenegro next year! Thanks, Ant Edwards. Project Officer, Maths Support The University of York Building online maths assessments using Numbas ? 04 July 2013*Where*: LFA 015, Harry Fairhurst Building, The University of York, YO10 5DD *When*: Thursday 4th July 2013, 10-4pm *Cost*: Free *Online booking*: http://goo.gl/zik6q *Background* Numbas is a web-based e-assessment system which makes it easy to create, produce and deliver powerful, reusable and flexible online maths testing. The system has been developed by a team at Newcastle University in response to widespread frustrations with ?off the shelf? VLE integration of maths notation in question authoring and students? answers and a desire for more sophisticated randomisation of questions. Free to use and open-source with a user-friendly interface, Numbas allows the authoring of questions which include randomised content throughout and LaTeX rendering of mathematical notation. Tests provide instant feedback to the student, including rendering of the student?s answers in mathematical notation while they type, and a practice mode which lets students regenerate randomised questions for further practice without starting a new session. Tests can be delivered stand-alone or through a number of VLEs, including Blackboard and Moodle, which can also track student progress and results. See http://www.ncl.ac.uk/maths/numbas/ for a more complete introduction. *The course* This one-day hands-on course, led by the Numbas team from Newcastle University, will provide an introduction and training on using Numbas and its question authoring facility. The event is supported by the sigma network for mathematics and statistics support (sigma-network.ac.uk), and hosted by the University of York?s Maths Skills Centre and E-learning Development Team. *Who is this course of interest to?* - Anyone who has tried and been frustrated with maths notation in other e-assessment tools. - Academics and support staff who think assessing maths skills online should be easy for instructors and productive for students for practice, formative or invigilated summative assessment. - Those wishing to convert static maths problems into dynamic randomly generated question sets. - Anyone wanting to find out more about Numbas to evaluate its suitability compared to other systems. *By the end of this course users will be able to:* - Create dynamic maths tests from pre-written question banks. - Author original questions using the Numbas questions authoring tool with options to include randomly generated variables and media such as video. - Create standalone maths tests which use SCORM to interact with popular LMS / VLE platforms, such as Blackboard and Moodle. - Contribute to the pool of shared maths questions and resources available through mathscentre.ac.uk. *Timetable* Please see http://www.sigma-network.ac.uk/building-online-maths-assessments-using-numbas-04-july-2013/ *Cost* FREE (supported by the North East England sigma Hub). Lunch and refreshments will be provided. *To apply* Give us your details through the online booking form (http://goo.gl/zik6q) and we will get back to you as soon as we can to confirm your place. Please note places are strictly limited, to give all participants exclusive use of a PC for the duration of the course. For queries, please email ant.edwards at york.ac.uk. Please find attached a copy of the programme of events, featuring policymakers and key academics in the science and mathematics education field. The conference will bring together policymakers, practitioners and researchers from Scotland and England to discuss key issues and to set out priorities and an agenda for increasing STEM participation in such a way that society?s needs are met and individual potentials are taken fully into account. Speakers include Prof. Graham Donaldson (University of Glasgow); Prof. Wynne Harlen (Visiting Professor, University of Bristol); Ian Menzies (Education Scotland); Fiona Robertson (HMI: Mathematics, Education Scotland); Peter Main (Institute of Physics); Prof. Derek Bell (College of Teachers, independent consultant); Adrian Alsop (Director for research, partnerships and international, Economic and Social Research Council), Prof Michael Reiss (Institute of Education, University of London); Prof Kenneth Ruthven (Cambridge University); Prof Jim Ryder (Leeds University). At the conference, policy-makers, practitioners and researchers from Scotland and England will discuss key issues and to set out priorities and an agenda for increasing STEM participation in such a way that society?s needs are met and individual potentials are taken fully into account. The conference will address the following questions: ? What can research tell us about why young people choose to study STEM subjects? ? Why is the UK failing to deliver equitable participation? ? What can we do to raise attainment and how pedagogy and assessment can promote this? If you have not yet confirmed your place at the conference please RSVP by Friday, June 21st: tisme-admin at kcl.ac.uk Finally, the suggested hashtag for this conference is #STEMinScotland, and you can join us in conversation by following our Twitter account: @TISMESciMaths.
