Primary Specialist for Mathematics ---------------------------------- The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC) in Muizenberg, seeks to appoint a Primary Specialist in Mathematics. This is a full-time contract position commencing 1 April 2014 and ending 31 December 2016. Duties: Take the lead as our Primary Specialist in Mathematics; Design and review new study materials (mathematics, and didactics) for distance-learning courses for university accredited professional development courses for teachers of grades 1 to 9; Teach on the courses, through workshops, lectures, contact sessions and TV broadcasts; Support and advise students including online support; Website maintenance; Assist with event management; Plan fundraising events and find new funders for projects; Undertake the management of administrative tasks related to the AIMSSEC Projects such as recruitment, record keeping of applications for courses and student admissions; Record marks and assignments using the AIMSSEC online course management system; Organise residential courses including course registration. Project Title: Improving progress for lower achievers through Formative Assessment in Science and Mathematics Education (FaSMEd). Abstract: This three year international project involving AIMSSEC and eight European partners aims to research the use of technology in formative assessment classroom practices in ways that allow teachers to respond to the emerging needs of low achieving learners in mathematics and science so that they are better motivated in their learning of these important subjects. The project will adapt and develop existing research-informed pedagogical interventions (developed by the partners), suited to implementation at scale, for working with low attaining pupils and transforming teaching.
