From phillip.kent at gmail.com Wed Oct 3 12:05:19 2012 From: phillip.kent at gmail.com (Phillip Kent) Date: Wed, 03 Oct 2012 12:05:19 +0100 Subject: [Maths-Education] Maths-Art seminars at London Knowledge Lab, 11 October: Taneli Luotoniemi, 'Towards a three-dimensional knot ornamentation' References: Message-ID: <1349262319.11876.110.camel@phillipkent-macbook> ** PLEASE CIRCULATE ** ALL WELCOME ** TOWARDS A THREE-DIMENSIONAL KNOT ORNAMENTATION An LKL Maths-Art Seminar by Taneli Luotoniemi Thursday 11 October 2012, 6.00 - 7.30pm The geometric rosette pattern drawn with a compass can be used as a template to construct a variety of rotationally symmetric, alternating and closed knot ornaments in two dimensions. Applying this method to the third dimension brings forth new challenges: what is the three-dimensional analogue for the rosette pattern, how to achieve rotational symmetry in 3-D, and what kind of object may be knotted in an ornament of higher dimensions? Answering these questions prompts the artist to take some steps into the domains of geometry and topology. TANELI LUOTONIEMI is a doctoral student of art, and a teacher of descriptive geometry, at the Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture in Helsinki. His research investigates the interlacing of the artistic and the mathematical, with a focus on his own construction of geometric knot ornaments. Next seminars: 8 November, Adam Ockelford, "Zygonic theory: a new approach to music analysis"; 13 December, Pre-Xmas Mathematics and Art "Hands On" *LKLMathsArt on YouTube: videos from the Maths-Art seminars. http://www.youtube.com/user/LKLMathsArt *Visit the website and seminar archive: http://www.lkl.ac.uk/events/maths-art *Join the email list for future seminar announcements: http://www.dcs.bbk.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/lkl-maths-art ++++++ Dr Phillip Kent, London Knowledge Lab p.kent at ioe.ac.uk phillip.kent at gmail.com www.phillipkent.net m: 07950 952034 ++++++ -- ++++++ Dr Phillip Kent, London, UK mathematics education technology research phillip.kent at gmail.com mobile: 07950 952034 www.phillipkent.net ++++++ "Man's rush to the n'th floor is a neck-and-neck race between plumbing and abstraction" - Rem Koolhaas From whiteley at mathstat.yorku.ca Thu Oct 4 04:05:51 2012 From: whiteley at mathstat.yorku.ca (Walter Whiteley) Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2012 23:05:51 -0400 Subject: [Maths-Education] Position in Mathematics Education: York University (Toronto, Canada) Message-ID: <774E4C64-3B22-4B78-9A0C-69BCF57CBF5D@mathstat.yorku.ca> MATHEMATICS EDUCATION: JOINT POSITION IN EDUCATION AND MATHEMATICS: York University?s Faculty of Education and Faculty of Science and Engineering invite applications for a joint full-time tenure stream appointment in Mathematics Education at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Faculty of Education offers innovative pre-service, graduate and professional development programs. Its staffing approach encourages faculty in Education to work with educators seconded from their schools and with colleagues from other academic departments across the University. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, offers an innovative mathematics major in Mathematics for Education which features a common core with all mathematics majors, in the first three semesters, along with a breadth of upper year mathematics courses and three courses designed for future teachers, but open to all mathematics majors (in Geometry, History of Math, and Research in Mathematics Education). A number of these majors are in concurrent programs with the Faculty of Education while others are preparing for Consecutive Education. In addition, the Graduate Program in Mathematics and Statistics offers a course-based MA in Mathematics for Teachers, with courses targeted at current teachers at high school or college. The Graduate Programs in Education and in Mathematics and Statistics jointly offer a group of courses focused on mathematics education as a Graduate Diploma in Mathematics Education. Applicants are invited to visit the Faculty of Education?s website at www.edu.yorku.ca and the Mathematics and Statistics Department?s website at http://www1.math.yorku.ca/new/ Candidates should have completed a Master?s degree in Mathematics or Statistics and have completed a doctorate in Mathematics Education with evidence of an established or ability to establish a strong program of scholarly research in Mathematics Education. The candidate will also have knowledge of mathematics content and pedagogy as reflected in the Ontario curriculum. The successful candidate should show excellence or the promise of excellence in teaching and will teach courses and develop curriculum in the undergraduate and graduate programs in both the Faculty of Education and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and be able to contribute to professional development programming. The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. A commitment to offer leadership in the Mathematics for Education program will be essential. Contributions that build upon ongoing collaborations in the area of mathematics education within the University and beyond will be an asset. The site will move away from a monthly publishing schedule to a more dynamic presentation of content, highlighting Featured resources on mathematical topics. Resources from the NRICH archives, giving you access to the best of our permanent collection, together with the Curriculum Mapping documents, will be available in the Collections in an easy-to-browse way. We hope that you and your students continue to find the site useful and inspiring. With best wishes from the NRICH Team. Hi Peter You may remember me from the BERA seminar in Swansea. Colleagues in the IoE have drawn my attention to an email discussion on the lists at nottingham.ac.uk Maths Ed forum referring to an article of mine in relation to Jo Boaler's research. I wasn't aware of this forum and have now joined. I have attached the article in question (which was published in FLM in July) so you can circulate it. Please be assured that not everyone from California, myself included, attacks her. I am proud of her accomplishments and I believe she has moved the teaching and learning of mathematics to a more progressive status. It is unfortunate that some are in disagreement with her. However, in my humble and honest opinion, she is great. In the wise words of kids and teens nowadays, " Jo Boaler, you ROCK!!!"
