Thanks, Tony, for this math-fiction treasure chest.
I teach a course on mathematical culture, and this list will enrich it.

PS. Only obvious omission from a quick scan are some of Hofstadter's dialogues in Gödel, Escher, Bach--though perhaps the genre isn’t fiction.

There are two additional notices:

(1) Information about mathematical fiction has been provided by Tony
Mann (October's speaker) at:
 http://staffweb.cms.gre.ac.uk/%7EA.Mann/Fiction/

(2) 9th December - "Art and Mathematics of Paper Folding" -
Contributions invited

In keeping with the time of year, we are proposing to make our pre-Xmas
seminar a bit less formal than usual, by inviting 5 or 6 short
presentations/demonstrations, instead of a single speaker. The theme
will be Art and Mathematics of Paper Folding. Please get in touch (email
to p.kent at ioe.ac.uk) if you would like to make a contribution. We hope
to have practical hands on activities, some Xmas refreshments, and to
offer the opportunity to see parts of the movie "Between the Folds" on
the London Knowledge Lab "big screen" (OK, it ain't the Odeon Leicester
Square, but it's not too bad :-))

ROBERT REID AND THE ART OF SPACEFILLING IN TWO AND THREE DIMENSIONS

An LKL Maths-Art seminar by
Anthony Steed, Simon Bexfield, John Sharp and Robert Reid
Thursday 11 November 2010, 6.00 - 7.30pm

Robert Reid has been an avid recreational mathematician for many
decades, and is world famous in the recreational mathematics and puzzle
community, known particularly for his contributions to the field of
tessellations and geometric dissections. (Many of the latter can be
found in the book “Dissections Plane & Fancy” by Greg Frederickson.)

This seminar introduces some of Robert's unusual creations for space
fillers and solid dissections, as well as his tessellations in two
dimensions. Anthony Steed will will talk about some tessellations and
Robert’s “Bow-tie” spacefiller, and also 3-D printing methods for making
such objects; Simon Bexfield will talk about the "Bathke" spacefiller,
and John Sharp will talk about spacefilling and the trisection of the
cube. Robert himself will present building blocks made from squashed
cubes, families of infinite varieties of space fillers, five-way
tessellations of the plane, the "squirmfest" (a solid space filler with
more than fifty faces), a “cockrell” made of five identical modules, and
over a hundred tessellations both black and white and coloured.

ANTHONY STEED is Professor of Virtual Environments & Computer Graphics
in the Department of Computer Science at University College London.
SIMON BEXFIELD is a recreational mathematician and puzzle maker; he is
also a wood worker and sees himself as an inventor, which he defines as
the skill of taking a concept and making it a reality. JOHN SHARP is a
mathematician and mathematics educator; he is Visiting Fellow at LKL and
one of the organisers of the Maths-Art seminars. ROBERT REID grew up in
England, but spent more than 50 years living in Peru, pursuing various
careers. Now living in London, he continues his study of geometry and
the creation of new spacefillers and dissections.
