Understanding techno-mathematical literacies (TmL) in vocational
education: Lessons from Dutch research

by Arthur Bakker
Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education,
Utrecht University

Tuesday May 11, 5.30 to 7.00
Room 802, Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, London, WC1H 0AL

Technical vocational education faces the challenge of providing students
with mathematical literacies that are appropriate for the workplace
context, and students' future employment and educational needs. We term
the literacies involved in the workplace as being 'techno-mathematical',
as they typically involve combinations of mathematical and technical
competencies whilst working with computer and other IT systems. This
research project has been examining the perspectives of students,
teachers and employers on TmL, in the case of Dutch senior secondary
vocational education (MBO), and has been developing software tools to
support students' development of mathematical literacies.

Audience: mathematics and science educators, and researchers interested
in vocational education and training.

No reservation required, but an email to p.kent at ioe.ac.uk would be
appreciated for planning purposes.
