The Marang Centre for Mathematics and Science Education in the School of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand aims to promote excellence, innovation and, leadership in mathematics and science education. The centre wishes to make appointments as soon as possible as detailed below. The Marang Centre has obtained funding from the Standard Bank of South Africa for research into five areas. These are:

· Multilingualism and the learning of mathematics and science in school

· Mathematical literacy

· Science Awareness and Informal Learning

· Effective methods for teaching mathematics and science

Additionally, a new project will shortly be under way focused on professional development within the teaching of secondary mathematics. There is also an interest in Marang in primary mathematics teaching and in tertiary teaching of maths and science.
