English Martyrs School in Leicester has secured Lottery funding for children
to run a radio station during National Science and Engineering Week 2008 (7
to 16 March). Broadcasts will combine music, interviews, lively
conversation, and listener phone-ins and perhaps drama. Broadcasts will
focus on raising questions and debate on issues of science and technology
which fascinate and stimulate young people. It is planned that the
broadcasts will later be repeated as podcasts via the Internet.

Enthusiastic technology teacher Paul Wilby has already run a similar
successful station and will be building on that experience to make this a
very successful event. English Martyrs has a fully equiped broadcasting
studio and the children are enthusiastic, talented and very stimulating to
work with. All day-time broadcasts will be conducted by school children
themselves and will go out to the whole population of Leicester.

This is a wonderful opportunity for scientists and engineers at all levels
to engage young people with STEM on several levels. By talking to the young
broadcasters we can support them in their efforts and show that we believe
they are performing a valuable service. By exploring issues on air we can
communicate STEM to thousands of people in Leicester. And scientists and
engineers can gain experience of broadcasting in a fairly gentle way, away
from the national spotlight without feeling intimidated by professional
journalists.

Paul is urgently looking for people who have a good knowledge of some area
of modern science or technology to be interviewed on air (or to be recorded)
by students. He would also like to hear from people willing to help this
exciting project in any other way.

If you are willing to get involved please contact Paul on
paul.wilby at btinternet.com.

Alternatively please pass this email on to your contacts.

Thank you.
