Dear Colleague,

We invite you to attend the 2nd Science and Mathematics Education
Conference (SMEC 2006) which will be hosted by the Centre for the
Advancement of Science Teaching and Learning (CASTeL). The conference
takes place on September 18th-19th 2006 at St. Patrick?s College,
Drumcondra in Dublin.

SMEC 2006 will concentrate on the interconnections between science and
mathematics at all levels from primary to third level. Topics to be
discussed include:
1. How essential is a good foundation in Mathematics for the teaching
and learning of Science?
2. How well do teaching methodologies translate between Science and
Mathematics?
3. Are recent interventions in Science and Mathematics syllabi and
assessment at all levels having the expected impacts?
4. Are there lessons to be learned on how we learn Mathematics and
Science from research in neuroscience?

You are invited to submit an abstract for presentation (oral/poster) on any
area of mathematics or science education. A bursary will be awarded for the
best student poster presentation. For registration and abstract submission,
please complete the forms available online at www.dcu.ie/smec. Forms may
be submitted
electronically (preferred) to smec2006 at spd.dcu.ie or by post to the
Conference Secretary, SMEC 2006, St. Patrick?s College, Drumcondra,
Dublin 9, Ireland.
