The Mathematics Department, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, invites applications for an Open Rank, tenure or
tenure-track Mathematics Education Position, at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level beginning Fall 2006.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
For appointment as Assistant Professor:
* A doctorate in mathematics education or a related field.
* A strong background in mathematics evidenced by at least the ability and qualifications to teach lower level
undergraduate mathematics courses.
* Evidence of a potential for excellence in teaching.
For appointment as Associate or Full Professor, the above qualifications, together with the following:
* Substantial research experience in mathematics education, accompanied by a substantial publication record.
* Evidence of excellence in teaching.
* A history of successful research grants.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
For appointment as Assistant Professor:
* Teaching experience.
* Experience working with K-12 schools and school systems.
* Research experience in K-12 school systems.
* Master's level achievement in mathematics.
* A fundable current research program in mathematics education.
For appointment as Associate or Full Professor, the above qualifications, together with the following:
* Demonstrated capacity to direct a research team.

The successful candidate will join an active Mathematics Education Research Group including Maria Blanton, Gary
Davis and Stephen Hegedus, who share close working relationships with researchers at TERC, the Concord
Consortium, SRI International, and other national and international research groups. Current plans include development
of a joint doctoral program as well as a Center for Learning Sciences. Our current National Science Foundation and
Department of Education (State & Federal) funded grants total around $4 million. They include research on:
* Teaching and learning mathematical proof across grades K-16.
* Algebraic thinking in the elementary grades.
* Symbolic cognition in undergraduate mathematics.
* Classroom wireless connectivity
* Scaling up calculus simulation software in Texas - 150 schools, 8000 students.
* Quantitative micro-analysis of mathematics classrooms.
* Improving teaching & learning, grades 4-8, Wareham/Carver school districts.
