Position Announcement
Science and/or Mathematics Education, to begin Fall 2005
Michigan State University

Michigan State University is continuing to build its priority initiatives in
science and mathematics education. The University is committed to
strategically
increasing our capacity to continue providing national leadership in science
and mathematics education scholarship in the coming decades. We will build on
our long-standing record of excellence in science and mathematics education
research, development, and teacher education, and will continue to provide
outstanding teaching of undergraduate and graduate students in teacher
education, mathematics and the sciences. Candidates will have the opportunity
to participate in our many externally funded projects (Carnegie Teachers for a
New Era, NSF Math and Science Partnership PROM/SE, Center for the Study of
Mathematics Curriculum, Center for Curriculum Materials in Science).

We seek faculty candidates with primary research interests in science and/or
mathematics education to fill as many as three tenure-track positions at MSU.
Two positions are available in the Department of Teacher Education, in the
College of Education, at the assistant, associate or full professor rank. One
position is available through the Division of Science and Mathematics
Education
in the College of Natural Science (CNS), at the assistant or associate
professor
rank in science education.

The faculty with interests in science and mathematics education at MSU spans
several academic units and work collaboratively to address cross-university
needs and responsibilities, with coordination provided through the Division of
Science and Mathematics Education. Graduate students may pursue doctoral work
in mathematics education in the Department of Mathematics, the Department of
Teacher Education, and the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology,
and Special Education (CEPSE). Students interested in science education pursue
degrees through the Departments of Teacher Education and CEPSE, with
collaboration from CNS faculty and programs. Joint appointments and other
cross-departmental and cross-college arrangements are possible and encouraged.

All candidates are expected to have an earned doctorate in science or
mathematics education, science, mathematics, or a related field; a record of
exceptional scholarly accomplishment or promise through published material;
and
evidence of a capacity to contribute to the intellectual, research, and
instructional life of MSU. Senior candidates must demonstrate evidence of
success in obtaining and leading funded research projects, strong
collaborative
work, and a pattern of national leadership in science or mathematics
education.
Candidates with interest in a primary appointment in Teacher Education are
expected to have background and expertise in teacher education and/or student
learning. We also encourage candidates with research interests in teacher
learning or development, local, state and national policy issues, and/or
technology. Candidates with interest in a primary appointment in the sciences
must have a strong background (M.S. or extensive coursework) in science, and a
strong or emerging record of research and scholarship in science education;
preference will be given to candidates with experience in biology education,
however expertise in any of the sciences will be considered.

Duties will vary depending on departmental placement, rank, university and
academic unit education needs, and the candidate's experience and interest.
They will include some or all of the following: carrying out a program of
research in science or mathematics education; teaching preservice mathematics
or science teacher education courses; teaching graduate courses in mathematics
or science education; seeking research funding; participating in departmental
or college committee work; advising masters and doctoral students; and
fostering collaborations with the Colleges of Education and Natural Science,
and the K-12 community. Senior candidates will also be expected to provide
leadership in MSU's mathematics or science education research programs,
establish interdisciplinary collaborations and school-university partnerships,
and provide mentoring for junior faculty.

A complete application package consists of a cover letter, a curriculum vita,
two examples of representative scholarly writing, a personal teaching
philosophy statement, and three letters of reference addressing teaching and
research. The candidate should arrange for the submission of letters.

Review of applications will begin November 1, 2004 and will continue until the
