Peter's reference to Michel Thomas (note the spelling) is interesting as I
have just started to learn French from his CD based course (my 1966 O-level
being completely useless in practice). He has an interesting background
having been brought up in France and Germany. He also spent the war partly
in a concentration camp and then, having escaped, as a resistance fighter.

His style of teaching, as Peter says, involves no homework or note taking
and equally important, starts from where the student is. In this case that
means developing the French out of the already existing command of English.
Very Ausubelian.
