Mathematics Education Research Centre Seminar
Definitions and Images for the Definite Integral Concept
SHAKER RASSLAN
Oranim School of Education, Israel
Abstract:
Definitions and images, as well as the relation between them, of the
definite integral concept were examined in 41 English high school students
from 'A' advanced level. A questionnaire was designed to explore the
cognitive schemes for the definite integral conceot that becomes active in
identification problems. One of the research questions aimed to check
whether the students knew to define the concept of definite integral.
Another question was whether the students knew how to apply the definition
of the concept for specific functions of a function, which changes its
sign. A third question investigated whether the students knew to
approximate the definite integral (to use the Mid-point rule of the
Trapezium Rule). The results show that only 7 students out of 41 of our
sample knew the definition but between 2 and 21 students of our sample
knew to apply the definition for specific functions and between 0 and 3
students knew how to apply it for improper integrals.
