Dear Colleagues,
Please note the latest informaion concerning the conference CERME 2:

A registration form can be found at the website
http://www.erme.uni-osnabrueck.de/cerme2.html

The website continues to be updated as the conference planning proceeds, so
it is worth keeping in touch with it. In particular leaders for the
working groups are still in negotiation and are being posted as they are
agreed. Abstracts of papers need to be with group leaders by the end of
September.

The chief aims of ERME are to promote Communication, Cooperation and
Collaboration in Research in Mathematics Education in Europe.
=46undamentally we need to know more about the research which has been done
and is ongoing, and the research groups and research
interests in different European countries. We need to provide opportunities
for collaboration in research areas and for inter-European
cooperation between researchers in joint research projects. This conference
is designed to promote these aims.

The conference is designed to foster a communicative spirit. It
deliberately and distinctively moves away from research presentations by
individuals towards collaborative group work. Its main feature is to be a
number of Thematic Groups whose members will work together
in a common research area. There are 7 groups in this conference.
Researchers wishing to present a paper at the conference should submit
the paper to one of these groups.

                                                            (Names and
Addresses of the Group Coordinators will follow.)

Each group will have 3 or 4 group leaders, from 3 or 4 different countries,
each having research interest and expertise in the theme of the
group. One of these leaders
will coordinate the group (group coordinator) and be responsible for
decisions and actions. Group leaders will receive papers and will
organise a rigorous review process involving the prospective participants
who have sent in the papers.

If you wish to submit a paper to this conference it should be sent to the
group coordinator of ONE of these groups. (For details see:
http://www.erme.uni-osnabrueck.de/cerme2/Paper_format.htm) If you are
unsure of which group your paper best fits, please send it to
one group, but indicate other groups to which it might also be relevant.
The receiving group coordinator will decide together with the other
group leaders on its designation and, if necessary, forward it to another
group, informing you of what has been done. Please inform also
the conference Secretariat by sending the title of your paper and the
proposed group to which you have submitted it. The Secretariat will
coordinate its progress within the groups.

Accepted papers will be 'presented' to group members in advance of the
conference. They will be distributed in electronic form, about two
weeks before the conference begins, so that they can be read as preparation
for the conference. There will be no presentations as such
during the group work, although references will be made to the distributed
papers. The purpose of this practice is to enable groups to
work, rather than time being taken up with presentations.

The group leaders will organise the work of the group as follows:

1.Receive papers from prospective members of the group.
2.Read the papers and organise a peer review process.
3.Receive reviewers comments, decide on papers for inclusion in the
programme and possibly on subgroupings within the main
       group.
4.Distribute accepted papers to group members before the conference.
5.Organise a programme of work to include references to presented
papers, large and small group discussions, working sessions for
developing common ideas and research programmes etc. The spirit of
this work should be as democratic and inclusive as is
possible. Papers which are not distributed for 'presentation'=20
should be available at the conference for reading by group
       members.
6.Facilitate ongoing work by the group or subgroups formed during the
working sessions.
7.Organise informal or formal collection(s) of papers for distribution
and/or publication.

Schedule
Deadline for sending papers: 30th September
The papers will be reviewed by 30th November
Deadline for sending the revised papers to the conference secretariat: 31st
January

Poster Presentations

Poster presentations are designed for new researchers to present their
work. Posters will be displayed throughout the conference, with
sessions for discussion with presenters at their posters. The content of
posters should be firmly in the area of research in mathematics
education. Abstracts for posters should be submitted, for approval, to the
Programme Committee via the Conference Secretariat on the
poster form. Details of size and format of posters are provided later.

Details of venue, accommodation and costs
The conference will be held in a famous spa town Mari=E1nsk=E9 L=E1zne, in t=

Czech Republic. It will take place in the Evropa hotel in the
town centre near the colonnade. Plenary and seminar rooms are situated in
the hotel.
Accommodation is offered in the Evropa hotel with 140 beds in single,
double and three-bedded rooms, some of them with a shower and
toilet. Further accommodation is possible in the Flora hotel (150 m away
from the Evropa hotel) in single rooms with a shower and toilet.
Breakfast will be served in the hotel, but all the other meals and the
social programme will be provided at or from the Evropa hotel.
The social programme will include a guided tour through Mari=E1nsk=E9 L=E1zn=
e
with an English speaking guide and a visit to Chopin's and
Goethe's houses.
The conference fee, including the social programme is

2500 CZK, i.e. 70 EURO for students and eastern Europe participants
       5000 CZK, i.e. 140 EURO for others.
(at the moment 1 EURO is about 36 CZK; this is subject to the
fluctuations of the exchange rate ).

Applications to participate in the conference, with payment, must be made
as follows:

1.The preregistration form, together with a deposit of the equivalent
to 30 EURO (not returnable), must reach the conference
organisers by 15th October, 2000. It is also acceptable to pay the
full fee at this stage. All people returning the registration form
       will receive a second announcement.
2.Confirmation of registration by payment of the remainder of the
conference fee must be received by January 10th, 2001. Details
will be found in the second announcement.

Payment can be made by VISA, Eurocard/MasterCard or by cheques. Cheques
should be made payable to: CERME 2, Charles
University, Faculty of Education, Klub pr=E1tel didaktiky matematiky.

The organisers need to know approximate numbers of participants by October
15th, 2000 in order to reserve accommodation. After
October 15th, it will still be possible to register providing that there
are places available. However, if all places are filled, no late
applications will be accepted.
The accommodation is provided in various price levels so colleagues from
Eastern Europe who might otherwise have difficulty attending
could participate at CERME 2.
The organizers are able to extend your accommodation in Mari=E1nsk=E9 L=E1zn=
e,
should you so wish. The organizers need to know it by
September 30th to be able to book the extra accommodation.
