Abstract: In hierarchical structure formation, cosmic filaments drive mass transport and galaxy cluster growth. Observations indeed reveal an intricate network of filaments connecting massive nodes. However, the growth of the intracluster medium through
the accretion of structures along filaments has not yet been directly observed. In this context, wide spectroscopic and X-ray surveys provide a unique opportunity to study the assembly of large-scale structure. In this talk, I will present a study combining
optical data from the CHileAN Cluster Galaxy Evolution Survey (CHANCES)/4MOST with eROSITA observations in the Shapley and Horologium–Reticulum superclusters. We compare the morphology of the X-ray emission with the location of optically detected filaments
and find clear evidence of alignment between the X-ray orientation of galaxy clusters and the inclination of the filaments connected to them. These results support a scenario in which filamentary accretion plays a key role in shaping galaxy clusters and demonstrate
a simple observational approach for tracing the growth of cosmic structure.
