Abstract: </b>Our view on the formation and evolution of structure in the Universe is currently undergoing a phase of rapid progress, driven especially by recent successes from new observational facilities. I will provide an overview of simulation and theory
answers from my PhD to a selection of the questions being posed now, covering: Do massive quiescent galaxies break LCDM? (How) Can we connect the first galaxies to present day galaxy clusters? And is the stellar formation history of our own Milky Way galaxy
typical, or are we an outlier?</div>
