Unfortunately, the situation in Physics & Astronomy is worse than in most areas. Most academics in the school can expect to receive an at risk letter next week (there are only a small handful of exceptions based on external buyouts) . We can also infer that

 one in three roles in the school will be made redundant. </div>

I encourage you not to panic but you should also be prepared. Have a look at the union's

The main thing to realise is that you are not alone in this. Like I said, nearly every academic in the school will learn they are at risk.  We are being threatened together so we should respond together.  Your UCU branch has announced a marking and assessment

 boycott (MAB) due to start on May 20. It is vital that every member of staff who is involved in assessments takes part - this is the priority.  Those who aren't involved in assessments should  donate significantly to support those who are. (As treasurer, I’ll

 be sending details on donating later today)</div>

Let me be clear: none of this has to happen. If you disregard needless redundancy payouts and the revaluation of CMC, the fact is that UoN made a slim profit last year (Ł0.8m to be precise).  We are not a poor uni.  The real reason for the cuts is the desire

 to rebuild cash reserves wasted on CMC so that UEB can fund yet more vanity projects. It's like they never learn.</div>

report to council</a> showed, another more sustainable way is possible without large scale job cuts and existential risks to the school. Unfortunately, it seems that many external council members didn't even bother to read this and blindly approved UEB's reckless

 plans. This should be the final proof that reason and logic is no longer at play. The only way to stop these cuts - to protect your job and mine - is to stand together and fight. That means taking an active part in the MAB. </div>

Of course, there is a short term cost to students and to your paycheck for taking part. Concerns like these are entirely understandable. But the alternative,  long term,  costs of doing nothing are much darker: you and I could be out of a job in a year's time;

 there may not even be a physics dept in five.  Think of the students whose CV will one day show a degree programme that no longer exists. </div>

But, despite these warnings,  you don’t need to panic. Remember, you are one of many - many who will  get a letter, and many who can fight back.  Union caseworkers are ready to support members as the redundancy situation escalates, but let’s not let it get

 that far. </div>
